its been years since i worked on a car but something looks....odd lol
i'm going to try to post the pics i took so maybe if anyone can help me out i would appreciate it lol
in the meantime i have this hose that is attatched to the engine just behind the oil fill cap which is insecure and currently going to a taped down oil bottle lol what the heck is up w/ that?
It looks like some one has messed around with the PCV system. The PCV system is supposed to ventilate the crankcase of blow by gases but it has its limits. It can't handle excessive blow by caused by bad rings or other mechanical issues.
The mystery hose was supposed to be connected to a PCV valve or it was the air inlet attached to a small filter in the air cleaner.
regards
rikard
the hose i am talking about goes from just behind (not secure) the oil fill cap to just under the master cylinder into an old oil bottle
so, i'm guessing this is a problem - albeit not a huge one (short term) as it has run ATLEAST the 200 miles i've driven it since i got it in this manner - but a big bump will nock the hose/valve thing out of the engine real easy.
Breather hose, and your engine was puking oil so bad they put a catch can on it instead of letting it oil down the air filter.
Are you going to freshen this up or just try to run it as-is? What is the PCV hose hooked to? (further back on the valve cover)
ok what is a breather hose and i've been running it as is but would REALLY like to fix it if that is possible w/o a huge investment of cash (rather strapped atm) lol
Normally that hose out of your breather cap goes to a filter in the side of your air cleaner. In one of your pics, I think I see the round hole where the filter normally is. Your PCV valve would be to the back of your valve cover. Check to make sure your PVC system is hooked up and the PCV valve is good, I'm guessing by the amount of oil it is plugged up pretty good. As Rikard says if their are too many internal probs, the PCV system will be overloaded and not be able to maintain.
BTW - That filter is about $3 and the PCV valve is $2-3 also, at any auto parts store.
i'll check that out, although as an FYI the only time i end up w/ the "oil bath" effect is when the big black thing (lol i don't know its name) pops out of the valve cover. just fixed that w/ a new grommet to where it is now secure.
Now that said i want to get this thing setup correctly so once i have the funds to replace more old parts i'll need to know exactly what parts i need and what to do with them lol
