My son has an '87 300 I6. The engine starts fine, initially, and will run beautifully until you turn it off. However, when you shut it off and try to re-start it either immediately or anytime within about 4 or 5 minutes, it won't fire back up. When you turn the key to the "ON" position, you hear the electric fuel pump run for a couple of seconds to pressurize the fuel rail , and then starter cranks the engine over just like normal, but the engine absolutely will not start back up. It doesn't even make any sound like it's trying to start. But wait about 4 or 5 minutes, hit the starter, and away she goes without any hesitation at all - just an instantaneous snap of the starter and the engine jumps alive.
This happens regardless of weather or not the engine is or is not up to operating temperature, so I don't believe it's vapor lock in the fuel rail. It's a real "puzzler".
Any suggestions as to what the problem is?
TIA for any possible solutions to this frustrating problem.
Maybe check for spark at the spark plug and fuel pressure at the pressure rail fitting when you have the no start situation. This would narrow problem to electrical or fuel. You should have spark and pressure when cranking.
