300 on skid....industrial. Forged crank for certain???
Hey guys, I'm gonna be doing a build in the future and i'm looking for a forged crank.
A guy in town here has as 300 self contained industrial on a skid with supposedly low hours. I haven't talked to him yet but i'm thinking maybe it was out west running an oil pump?
Anyways, what are the odds this has a forged crank? Anyway to tell externally? maybe by the casting numbers?
Also, Is there any truth that some of the industrial blocks were "X"/high nickel content etc?
I had a pump motor rebuilt for a pickup once, it was just a plain jane 300 nothing special about it. This doesn't mean yours won't but I can say not all of them did.

most of them were regular motors. the forged cranks usually came in the big trucks. usually a stationary motor has been run to death. what reason would there be to pull it off it's station than to change it out. the oil and gas rig motors were usually run 24/7, stopping only long enough to change the oil. when the hour meter got to a certain point, they were yanked, and replaced no matter how well they were still running.every once in a while you still see new ones "on a pallet" for sale. not so much lately though, everyone is useing diesel now
Pump motors seem to be hit and miss, some have the good stuff and some don't. I also have a 428 that was a pump and has the 1UB $ crank. I don't know if different pump makers specified different internals or what but you never really seem to know what you have gotten until you open it up.
