Got my 47 1.5 ton ford!

Well, I got a 1947 ford 1.5 ton. Its in pretty good shape. I have a few questions

1. How do I put more brake fluid in this thing?

2. What is a good cleaner to use to clean the gas tank. Or will a machine shop clean it for me for a fee. Its pretty nasty.

3. Will leaving the ignition on too long melt my coil? Basically I was trying to start the truck, got it running, Then it sucked up bad gas and died. Went to go do something else (forgot to shut ig. off) and came back and coil was turning into goo. I was wondering if this is normal, or if there is an underlying problem here.

4. What are people running for a lead substitute in the gasonline?

5. What is something fun to put on the back of this thing (flatbed, regular truck bed, etc...)

47 Ford

I have a 46 1 1/2 ton.

The master cylinder is located under the floor boards, right between the drivers feet. There is an access hole under the floor mat.

I had my gas tank lined with some kind of liquid fiber glass that sealed it up real well. (It was rusted) Its been so long ago that I dont remember what it cost but $50.00 comes to mind. You could also have it steam cleaned. I've done that to other tanks before.

Its all according to weather the points were closed or not. If they were closed, you probably didnt do them any good. My 46 has dual points with the distributor tucked behind the fan.

I get concentrated lead additive at Walmart that has been working very well for me.

My truck has a wooden body on it. I only use it on the farm to haul hay for our animals etc.

Thanks for the reply.

About the coil. I was trying to figure out why It wouldnt start at first, and traced it back to the coil. I had really really weak spark. I know its only a 6 volt system, but I've seen better spark out of old lawn mowers. So I didnt know if there was something internally wrong with it, that also caused to to do this when left on.

I mis read your post, leaving the key on shouldnt hurt the coil but it could burn the points. I had to replace my coil too. They do get weak.

Where did you get your replacement coil from?

I just bought a plane jane coil from a local auto parts store. Just make sure to get one without a built in resistor. I have one just like it on my old Farmall tractor.

So you just use a regular 12V coil that requires an external resistor on your 6V system?. Another question I have too, where is the external resistor located on this truck?

I apologize for all of the questions but I'm pretty new to the whole points/coil ignition system. If we were talking coil on plug, or anything new this would be a walk in the park.

Yes, that is correct, a plain jane 12 volt coil, but you only feed it with 6 volts so you only get 6 volts out of it. Your truck has no resistor. The resistor is used if you convert your old truck to 12 volts. You have to swap the 6 volt generator for a 12 volt alternator, change all of the light bulbs and install a resistor so that only 6 volts goes to the coil, otherwise you will burn the points. The 6 volt starter is OK to run on 12 volts.

Dan, how about using an ignition coil from BWD like this one? Item Detail | O'Reilly Auto Parts

It is a 6V coil. Should be plug and play, no?

The 6 volt coil from BWD probably will plug and play, as does a 12 volt coil w/o a resistor. The 12 volt coil wouldn't be original though.

So when are we getting pictures? Would love to see it.

As for the coil. A buddy of mine brought me a box of old coils he had because mine has the plastic piece broke off that the connector attached to but the wire still stuck out. I tested them both with an ohm meter and they both showed close to zero ohms of resistance and I used it has worked great so far. I have put maybe 10 miles on it since then and no problems with it. Maybe you can do the same to find a coil that works.
