98' expy slightly shuttering again throughout RPM range and at idle
Okay forum,
I need some help in figuring out what is going on with this Expy.
A little history, it has 140K on it. I replaced plugs at 90K and 2 faulty COPS and I changed fuel filter 12 months ago. I currently have 2 aftermarket COPS (unknown whether USA or Chinese) and 6 factory. I replaced the plugs & wires at 130K and I used autolite Iridium plugs. I checked and replaced the EGR and the EGR regulator. Replaced all the injectors today. I also cleaned the MAF and the throttle body (did not remove it to clean). Still no luck with the shuttering.
Any ideas on what is causing this problem? Is it the ignition, fuel system, vacuum leak, wire or a sensor? I have not checked the fuel pressure regulator or the pump yet. No CEL or codes stored and I only put about 5K a year on it now.
Any ideas would be great, thanks for your help in advance.
Rodney,
98' expy, 5.4, UNI air filter, 3" from CAT back w/ Flowmaster
140K, Amsoil, Nokian Wr's
It could be an intake or exhaust valve not sealing, in which case you'd have to do a compression test. It could be a weak/clogged fuel injector, or as you've already stated...a weak fuel pump.
1) Use 33% on gas tank with 9-10 gallons of fuel. Cleans fuel injectors, fuel lines, removes moisture from fuel lines. Put it in gas tank at the gas station, then fill it with 9 gallons of fuel, so it can mix well. Just read the bottle for the normal mix ratio.
2) Another 33% goes to your crankcase. so open your oil cap and pour it in. FYI-It does thin out your oil, so drive for about 10-20 miles then change the oil and filter.
3) The last 33% goes to the intake manifold. It cleans intake valves, cylinder, top of the piston, exhaust valves, etc. To do this, you have to use any vacuum line that goes to the intake manifold. The brake booster line is perfect for this. Pour it in slowly until it feels like the engine is going to stall, then back off and let it recover. Keep doing this until the can is empty. If you have a lot of carbon buildup in the intake the exhaust will smoke like crazy for a few minutes as it washes through the system and burns off.
Try the Seafoam it works great. I ran it through my '05 EXPY EB 4x4 with 96k before I changed out the plugs. I just followed the can directions and it worked great. It is more responsive. Only problem, was that I didn't have alot of Carbon Build Up, and did not get the smoke show that I was hoping for. But I guess that is what I get for living in Socal with all the crazy gas additives etc..
Fuel pump @ 33 PSI vacuum attached and 42 PSI with vacuum removed from regulator. Pressure stays @ 42 PSI for 10 minutes after engine shut off. Seems to be within tolerance.
Also ran the SeaFoam and no build up of carbon, still troubleshooting. I have not used the Rislone yet, going to check the plug wires next, maybe I missed one. I have unplugged a few injectors and COP's and the engine runs worst when I do.
Anyone have a good idea to where I can find the vacuum hose part numbers? What I missing? Mechanical problems? Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Oh i never mentioned my mileage display showed almost 600 miles until empty. I am getting 10 in the city on a good day, any ideas? Is it telling me something? Has anyone had that experience? Thanks
I found several broken vacuum lines right next to the battery. If you have 4WD, these vacuum lines run from the engine to the 4WD system. They get corroded from battery acid alot cause their plastic.
First, i would like to thank all of you for your assistance. An update, I found a fouled plug in cylinder #2. replaced it and she is running fine. I never found a fouled plug in an engine that is in good mechanical condition (or thought it was.) I guess if I get another fouled plug I"ll need to start to look at some mechanical issues. Thanks again.
