Anybody knows who sells a rear sump for a 302 motor which is coming out of a 1978 Ford pickup. I plan to use this motor on my 56 which has a MII frontend. Been finding a lot of later models but not one which fits a 78
I bought a 302 out of a 80 or 81 van a few years ago, it had the rear sump pan . I removed it and replaced it with a front sump from a 77 granada 302. I think the 78 ford pickup engine would be the same as the granada. JIM
the late model rear sump pan will fit your 78 motor no problem just make sure it is for a 302 and not the 351. the difference is the dipstick location. the newer blocks had the dipstick in the side of the block while the early engines had the dipstick in the timing cover. you will also need the corresonding pickup tube for the rear sump pan.
not sure what people do about the dipstick location. i would se if you can find a pan with the dipstick bung built into it like the 460's had. that would be the easiest way.
This is one of the best deals I've ever seen for this kit. Any oil pan that fits a 289 or 302 will fit your '78 302 block. These are all Ford factory parts, so you know the quality is good.
I bought mine from a vendor on ebay...it was a Ford Racing kit that came with the pan and the pickup. When changing over to the rear sump configuration be aware that you must also replace the oil pump...the rear sump pump has the pickup tube coming out the side of the pump instead of the bottom.
Bill...perhaps I confused the 302 with the 460 that I converted, but one of these engines required an oil pump swap when I went from the front sump to the rear sump pan.
Dido That.. My pan and pickup tube that I bought off wrecking yard over the internet came from a bronco. It has the dip stick tube on the side of the pan and fit my 289 block and MMII in my 53 F100 perfectly.
My personal recommendation is the early bronco rear sump pan.
While 1966/77 289/302 Bronco oil pans/pickup tubes will work, the supply is limited. You usually do not find these in wrecking yards.
NOS parts are almost non-existant. And...1966/77 Bronco 289/302's used two different oil pans, two different pickup tubes, one stud for #3 bearing cap.
I notice the sump pan from Paw engine parts is mentioned twice. How do you do the dip stick with this setup. Also on the Bronco pan Number Dummy mentions two types were used on the Bronco. My question is will both bronco pans work or only one and how do you tell them apart. I must admit I'm leaning toward the one from Paw that is when I make sure I know how to do the dip stick setup.

There is a fitting/bracket in the side of the pan for the dip stick tube. It is a factory arrangement, exactly as used in 80's-90's Mustangs. You can barely see it just above the bracket on the dip stick in the photo, at the block flange on the pan.
Not to hijack this thread but along these lines, if I have a rear sump pan and a dip stick that goes through the timming gear cover will this work? Will it give me a correct reading of how much oil is in the motor?
