1960F100 VIN Decoding

I was wondering if anyone can help me decode a partial VIN on a 1960F100? It looks to be a 4x4, and the owner states it is, but I want to make sure. The first part of the VIN is F10J0R. Can anyone be of help? I don't have the rest. Thanks

all you have there is
F100
223 six cyl
1960
San Jose, CA assembly plant

To find if it is 4x4 you need to find the axle codes
There were 2 front axle ratios that I see: code A - 3.92 and Code B - 4.55
Corresponding rear codes would be: OB - 3.92 and OD (or 04) both 4.56

This will hold you till Numberdummy gets here and clears it up.

Thanks for the info,

Here is what i just got on the front differential:

The tag on front differential has # 4712 on top the gear ratio on bottom 3.92. It is odd when I was on the Ford decoder it said Richmond? Could be a subbard of San Jose?

Anyhow the entire VIN number which i finally got out of him is
F10J0R26667

Thanks again,

First welcome, Second, don't trust the site decoder. There is nothing in the primary Vin that deciphers it a 2 or 4 wheel drive. You'll need to open the glovebox and get the rest of the information off of the data plate.

The 26667 at the end of your vin is the individual unit # assigned to each truck.

Welcome to FTE

According to the AXLE code, your F100 has factory installed 4WD.

F10 = F100 2WD or 4WD (1960 is the only year Ford used F10 for both).

J = 223 I-6.

0 = 1960.

R = San Jose (not Richmond!) CA Assembly Plant.

26677 = 1960 Numerical Sequence of Assembly (Serial Number).

I cannot decode the MODEL code of F103, as my parts catalog is missing the page with this info.

TRANS code F = Warner T-98 4 Speed Manual Transmission.

AXLE code 02A

02 = Ford 9" Rear Axle / 3.89-1 / non Limited Slip / 3300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.

A = Spicer-Dana 44-6CF Front Driving Axle / 3.92-1 / non Limited Slip / 3000 lb. Front Axle Capacity.

Y'all cannot go by the FTE VIN decoders, as they have all sorts of errors and omissions....for example:

The Richmond assembly plant closed in 1955, because it was outmoded and too small. It was originally built to assemble Model T's. It was replaced by the new San Jose assembly plant in 1956.

RH refered to Richmond prior to 1953. R refered to Richmond in 1953/55. R refered to San Jose from 1956 thru circa 1998.

btw: The San Jose assembly plant was torn down around 10 years ago, replaced by a mall.

The Richmond assembly plant is still there today. It was recently restored by the city of Richmond, and being rented out to multiple tenants for various uses.

Thank you very much for your help. This truck is definitely a keeper.

Now, what does anyone think about putting a 60 ford on an 02 Excursion Chassis and putting a 7.3L under the hood? I have one sitting around and couldn't help myself from thinking about it.
Thanks again NumberDummy. Also mr4speedford & mtflat for your input.

For 1960, F103 is the F100 4x4 5600 lb GVW model according to the info I have.

And putting the body and bed on an Excursion chassis, anything is possible given enough time and money.

If the truck is a keeper, why destroy it, why not go back as close to original as possible.
Just my 2cents

You are right. My intention is to put it back to stock condition. I am thinking about building a second one with the excursion frame with parts i see floating all over. Seems to be enough parts out there to do something like that. Well, pipe dream for now. I have an excursion and F250 that were both totaled and we kept them for spare parts for our fleet, but we rarely have axles go out on us and two frames just sitting there collecting dust so the thought popped in.

NumberDummy, I was going through some old posts about the VIN's on these 4x4 60's and came across one where you say that it is rare for them to factory built as many were farmed out to MH for the upgrade. The post is " 59-60 F100 4x4 has F10 series code?? ". How rare is it for the 4x4 to have been done in the factory? Thanks again for the feedback and decipher on the truck. It isn't like you can call up and get a Marti report on these like i can and have on my 70 Torino GT's.
