I've been looking for a camper shell for my truck for quite a while now, but can't find any used in my shade of blue. Not willing to fork over $1500+ for a new top. I came across this tonight, still checking it out and deciding if I like it. I like that it folds up neatly so it won't be a hassle when I need to pull the gooseneck.
Wondering if anyone has seen or used one. What do you think?
Pretty ingenious there Keith but I think it would look a little wimpy on our trucks, no offense, just my opinion. If anything if you wanted to cover the back go with a tono cover or something, just me though.
No offense taken here, I'm looking for opinions. The thought is that sometimes I go wheeling in the mountains and pull my Bronco. Rather than set up a tent, it's be easier to set up a cot in the bed and sleep there! And to keep things dry when we travel. I dunno yet though, wish I could see one in person on a SD.
I like the camper shell you have on your truck Mike, still looking....
I was going to go back and edit my remark, beings everyone has their own flavor but it is a pretty ingenious idea. As with the one I have, I was going to get just your regular old sliding window one, nothing special, just a shell to do the job, it was actually my wife that said, get this one, the one I have on now. They are expensive but they are built really good and will last my trucks life. I could keep an eye out for one around here in your color, your not that far from me...maybe 150 miles or so..If I got lucky and found one, I could take mine off and put yours on and meet you half way. Theres a place down the road and one out of town that has alot of used caps, I could take a look for yaa...
Keith, I have been around a couple of these and they work well. If you don't need it in the up position they fold forward toward the cab and are out of the way. You can get side windows but the one I have seen, the vinyl fogged pretty fast. The side skirts zip out as well. I have looked at these off and on for several years but they do not make them for my old stepside.
I've seen these on Super Duties and I think they look awesome. Very rugged looking, kind of like Doctari out there in Africa. Haven’t had an opportunity to actually do a hands on to see the workmanship. My opinion.
I found this one in my area, but if I understand correctly, the blue in 02 is a different shade than in 00. It looks close but a different paint code. I find them for 02-03 all the time. http://norfolk.craigslist.org/cto/1561041250.html
I like the utilitarian aspect of it, I think I'm going to give it a shot and try one out. They said they'd take it back if I didn't like it, less shipping.
I looked long and hard at them before I found my hard shell. I've talked to a few folks at the outerbanks that has them and they like them. Holds up well to high speeds and the winds of the OBX. I lucked up on a lower priced used shell, did the sanding and stripping my self and got it painted for a song. Got around $150.00 total... but had I not found that, I would probably have a soft topper now.
I like that soft shell idea. I had an ARE topper for a former truck I leased. Excellent quality, great fit and finish....also extremely expensive. I used to camp in the back or just haul or keep my dog back there. Kind of heavy and a pain to take off for tall stuff. I like the soft top, as it gives me some ideas about fabricating my own pop-up camper style for my custom flatbed. I could just add it when I need it. Not exactly what the OP had in mine, I know.
Thanks Barry, that's good know because I think I'm going to get one on the way today. I guess I'm a hardhead, in some ways I'd rather have a hard shell, but it isn't practical because I tow a goose and occasionally haul tall stuff or mulch, etc. I'm 50/50 on the looks of this soft top, but it allows me to fold it down so I can use the bed without having to try and figure out how to remove a hard camper shell by myself.
I like the idea a lot! I couldn't really use it though, because I have to haul mulch/bulk topsoil from time to time, as I have a small landscaping business. My roll-up tonneau cover is working well for now, but if it fit my style of trucking, I would get one. I could never go to a completely open bed though. I bought the truck with the tonneau, and can't imagine not having it. I like that my tools and stuff stay dry and out of the sun and snow.
I have seen these around and talked to one gentleman who had owned his for 5 years and loved it. The quality seams very good and the company stands behind them with a lifetime warranty I think. The guy I talked to to me he broke the zipper on the back 4 years after buying it and they replaced it no questions asked.
I think it looks kind of cool myself, reminds me of a military softop on the back of a deuce and a half .....maybe you should paint your truck od green and put some troop seats in the back!! lol

Which color are you going with? I would have got the Black, but the two I've seen were Gray on a white Dodge and Tan on Green F250. Both looked good. The guy I talked (ford) to had his for a few months, but said it traveled well on his trip and he didn't hear any flapping noise. He also said it did a great job keeping the bed dry and I know for a fact it did some serious raining that week. His only caution was don't leave it packed up wet, but that's common sense to me. I looked at it and it did seem pretty strudy and the canvas was very tight. The windows weren't the clearest, but then again the are plastic.
