I have a 2002 F250 7.3 turbo 179,000 miles. Truck will run fine for 3 months then just die. Will not crank until engine cools for several hours and then may die again in 10 minutes. If you leave it over night it will crank and run fine for a week or maybe 3 months until cycle starts all over. Normally the only codes are P0239 and P1249. The last time they were P0239, P1212, and P1249.
I have replace CPS several times, changed the PCM, changed fuel filters, check for loose connections, checked oil in HPOP. Even had it at the Ford dealership, but it was running and they could not find anything wrong with it. We have a diesel shop about 30 miles from the house. He said that next time it dies bring it to him right then. Not as easy as it sounds. If I wait until the next day it will always crank.
I have been looking at posts today and it sounds like it may be the IPR or ICP. Going to check them tomorrow.
So far I have been fairly close to home when it dies, but my luck is bound to run out. Going to have to get something I can depend on if cant fix it soon.
Welcome to FTE.....Others here will be on the way to help.
Can you hear the fuel pump buzzing when you turn the key on?Is the fuel bowl full of fuel?It should buzz for 25 seconds. What color is the new CPS?When it is spinning over is there any smoke out the tailpipe?
DC14 CONTINUOUS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1212
Note: This code may set after a high-pressure oil system repair (i.e., injector change). Drive vehicle to clear air from system after repair, and clear code.
Continuous DTC P1212 indicates that there was no ICP detected during crank (long crank time).
Possible causes:
high-pressure oil system repair
empty/low oil reservoir at crank
low engine oil level or incorrect viscosity
IPR circuit fault
damaged low-pressure oil pump
damaged IPR valve
damaged ICP sensor
damaged high-pressure oil pump
Check engine oil level.
Perform KOEO On-Demand Self Test to verify ICP/IPR circuit faults are not present at this time.
If the ICP sensor connections are clean & tight & the sensor is not leaking oil , I would guess the IPR is sticking ..
I have used both the black and the grey CPS. I have quite an assortment.
The fuel pump is running and bowl quickly fills with fuel, had filter out and watched it. Not sure but I do not think any smoke is coming out of pipe when trying to start.
Thsi was just covered in another thread..... but ! When it dies, is it raining outside ? Another guy on here and a intermittent stalling like you have. It was a wire chafing on a screw head and causing a short ! The problem may be that wire that runs over the drivers side valve cover ! The main wiring harness. Also have you done the 50 cent mod ? It could be a loose connection under the valve covers causing this to happen. Just a couple ideas !
How does it die? Does it just quit? Does it bog down or stall a little?
You could have a short. Just to rule it out, check any wires on or above the drivers side right shock, across the drivers side valve cover (these are the wires that run to the 42 pin connector) and that wire that is in the link posted by Russ.
Follow the main "highway" of all the wires and all off-shoots of that main wire bundle. You're looking for any chaffing, rubbing, etc. that can cause a short. If you do find one, back it off from the engine/chassis and try starting the motor. If the motor cranks then try shorting out that wire by rubbing it up against whatever was chaffing. If the motor sputters or dies then that's probaly the culprit.
I will recheck the wires for any bad spots. I have not pulled the valve covers and checked the connections, but I have check all the connections and wires that can be seen.
The thing that puzzles me is that when the truck dies, it is not running bad or anything. Everything is normal and then it dies just like you shut the key off. You can get out and leave it right were it died, not do anything at all to it, and come back 6 to 8 hours later and it will crank up and may run fine for several months. Rainy weather does not seem to have any thing to do with it.
It has left me a couple of times on the way to work and I will leave it by the road. Will pick it up on the way home that afternoon and drive it home. Will check for codes and will get P0239 and P1249.
Forgot to mention that the only thing different this time is that the brake lights are not working. Running lights and turn signals are fine. switch on brake pedal is activating the brake contol unit. Did not find any bad fuses in main panel. I have not had time to trace the wires or connectors, will do it this weekend. Dont no if this has anything to do with the shutting down.
Checked connections and wires, found nothing loose or bad. Checked ICP and founf oil in the top of it, going to order one Monday. Took wire off the ICP cranked truck and let it idle. Sounded the same with it hooked up and unhooked. Did give a code 1280, which it should have. Truck is still running fine at this time.
Did get the brake lights working by cleaning out the flasher switch.
Needed to get a computer that will do a KOEO check on the truck, anyone know a good inexpensive unit?????
Get AE. You will not regret it as it will pay for itself in the first 15 minutes you have it. Consider all the diagnostic tests you can do with it that you would normally pay out the ying yang for.
I could be wrong, but it almost seems like there is an intermittent short or connection somewhere. The truck runs fine and then just acts up one day, right?
Search for other threads that have the same code and symptoms as yours.
Truck has run fine since Feb. Yesterday I started it up and drove about 10 feet and it died. Would not start back up. Took the connection off the ICP and tried to start it,nothing. Put connection back on the ICP and truck started right up and still running fine. Showed code 1280. I guess the HPOP is getting weak.
Truck died again yesterday. Unplugged ICP, tried cranking, nothing. Plugged ICP in and unplugged EBP, tried cranking, nothing. Plugged it backin, tried cranking, nothing. Repeated the process and it started after I unplugged the EBP. Drove it straight to the diesel repair shop and put it on their computer. Codes 0476 and 1280 came up, but these may have been from being unplugged. Everything tested fine, mechanic said next time it died, dont try anything to start it, just call him so he can check it out while it will not start.
