Just noticed this the past few weeks...but when I'm driving at light loads, like in town, at light throttle I hear a distinct hissing sound that sounds like a huge vacuum leak. I don't notice it at idle or highway speeds.
I looked under the hood for obvious signs of leaking CAC pipes and so on, but didn't see anything.
what you describe to me sounds like the EBPV (exhaust back pressure valve) being activated. It has been my experience that even with the factory temp gauge reading normal but outside air temps very low and if I am not working the motor hard enough to generate some real heat my EBPV will still activate in an attempt to warm the motor up more.
The EBPV is a device locate at the turbo output that closes to restrict the exhaust and generate more heat in the engine. It will open back up under acceleration then start to close again under part throttle or cruise conditions.
The factory temp gauge is not a true engine temp reading: it is a PCM supplied value based on where the computer thinks "normal" should be at that moment. What I am trying to say with that is your engine may be cooler than you think and that is why the EBPV is activating.
So all in all I wouldn't worry about it, sounds normal to me.
sounds like the ebpv (exhaust backpressure valve) is closing on you. it should only close while the tuck is idling to help warmup but sometimes the ebpv tube gets clogged and causes it to close or maybe the sensor went bad. to trouble shoot to see if that it is in fact the ebpv unplug the electrical connector thats at the base of the turbo pedestal on the front side. i think its a white plug. that will disabe your ebpv which is harmless alot of us delete it totally. try that and see if it cures the "hissing"..........
What speeds are you driving when you hear it? If you are above about 20mph, the EBPV should be open allowing normal airflow. Trust me, I have had mine stick closed and even at light throttle you can tell that the valve is closed when it should be open. If all you are experienced is a noise and not a significant loss of power and increased smoke than I seriously doubt it is the EBPV.
My truck does exactly the same thing as the OP. When it is cold out or just very cold air....32 or below , my truck when crusing at light light throttle...like holding speeds 30, 40 50 whatever. Probably less then 10% throttle, my ebv will close as i am driving. The second i apply more throttle past a certain point if kicks right off and opens right up and the hissing noise goes away. Its definitely not stuck, as someone suggested, as you can hear it opening and closing at the right times. It has done this in cold winters for the 7 years i have owned it. I assumed and presume it is 100% normal. Unless someone has reasons otherwise, please chime in. Rustang67...i think you are 100% fine and definitely would not go looking for problems that probably don't exist.
