For this I'm thinking of vehicle lines that reached a peak - then the company "improved" them into absolute dogs.
A couple of good examples of this is the the Mustang and the Corvette. Everyone would agree the '65 Mustang is a classic, but the 1979 To say nothing of the Mustang II, Mach 1. Same with the Corvette, Thunderbird, and well pretty much all of Chevy's muscle cars.
I don't know, is this the fate of all classic cars. Heck, even Astin Martin's went from cool to crap (but recovered)
I'll agree that the Mustang and especially T-bird changed too much over time, but the Corvette, has not really changed that much, more just naturally evolved since the 1950's. Its has never had a back seat, a steel body, front or all wheel drive.
When the T-bird went from a small Ford to what was essentially a baby Lincoln, built in the Wixom plant and unibody, sales went way up. Later, it completely lost its way. The last one was really a baby Jaguar, and you know how that turned out.
So you think that the Mustang should have been shelved? Yes, looking back they were pooches in the 70s and early 80s but compare them to the vehicles of their time. Look at how far the Mustang has come.
Well I'll disagree about the Corvette. In particular I'm thinking of the mid-80's models. The ones with the absolutely gutless 350's.
Name a mainstream American V-8 that didnt suffer from early emissions technology. At least Chevy didnt put a four cylinder engine in it like the Mustang. The 'Vette itself never changed from its basic configuration.

Nope, Chevy didn't but the Mustang has also out-lived the Camaro.
What was wrong with the 79 Mustang?............The beginning of the Fox body Mustangs of the 80s/early 90s, IMO the best, most user friendly, capable, modable Mustangs ever.
Don't laugh....I want a 74-78 Mustang coupe. With a 460 in it of course!! And if Ford never had made a Mustang II, what would've hot rodders used for a great front suspension on their vehicles??

Had a 75 Mustang II with a built 302, what a sleeper!........I even removed the V8 emblems off it, aside from wearing the 13in tires out REAL fast, it was a great little car.

While the new Malibus aren't the same as the ones from the 60s, the new ones are quite fine as far as cars go. Whether or not it should wear the malibu name is a different story.
The '62 Corvette with 340 bhp 327 engine was the end of the line ... After that even the '67 with the L88 @ *cough* 430 *cough* official bhp pales ... The original body style is what really made the Corvette ... Once they put a hardtop on it, unwrapped the windshield and inletted the headlights ... UUGGHH ...
