Hello everyone, It doesn't appear anyone has done a tilt front on a '42-'47 before. I'm going to give it a shot. My cab is at a body shop here in Brisbane and is nearly finished (in primer).Bank account hurting now though ! I'm new to this forum and I can't see where to attach photos, any tips would be great. Thanks, Steve.
Doing the tilt on a 42-47 would involve a lot of work. The front fenders wrap into the cab ever so slightly giving a clearance problem if you tilt the entire fender. If you cut the fenders at the cab, there is no way to attach the front portion of the fender without major modification. If you go as far as the bolt that attaches the fender and end of the inner fender to make your cut, you'll probably need lots of internal support at the back of the fenders to keep them from "flopping around".
The only real "strength" point on the front sheet metal is at the radiator support. If you are using this as your pivot point, then make lots on measurements to make sure that there will be room for the radiator, fans and pullys.
Good luck.. I tilted a 37 chev coupe and it was a pain (and it was a 'glass assembly designed to tilt). It IS COOL if you have the patience and skill set (both lacking at this end )
Thanks John - I had anticipated a couple of dramas in that area. Bottom of fender will probably come REAL close to bottom door hinge too!
I don't want to cut the fenders; may have to re-work the edge that butts up against the cab. I've started making a frame to reinforce the fender/hood setup. The main support in front of the radiator where the original "U" shaped inner fender radiator support was, is now 1 1/2" x 1/4" square tube. Shouldn't break that! The original one was broken in half!
I'm picking up the cab from the body shop next week - and will now focus on work that doesn't cost much except my time for a while until the bank balance recovers!!!! The panel work on the fender/ hood I can handle myself.
