Front a rear tires replaced 1 year apart on 4x4??

I am looking at a used '03 Expy EB 4x4 with 118k miles. The owner has 4 Michelins on it but said the rears were put on 2 years ago and the fronts 1 year ago. Not sure of mileage when each was done. Since the vehicle is not local I can not see it or drive it but could this have been a bad situation or have caused any issues. I have no idea the tread depth and I doubt the owner is going to take 4 measurements. Any advice or since the fronts were replaced together and so were the rears is this okay? Is it only bad if you have a worn front/new front or worn rear/new rear tire that issues on the 4x4 could happen? tks

I personally don't see this as a bad thing - if you can verify there is no tread wear problems and the tires are wearing evenly. There could be any number of legitimate reasons to replace tires in diferent years. Maybe they bought 4 tires 2 years ago and had a road hazard on 2 that caused them to replace. Or, maybe only one was damaged but the owner decided to replace both (that's what I would do). If ball joints are bad or some other front end problem, you'd see excessive wear by now (even on the year old set). If they have receipts and have a good story, then I think you're fine.

Well it sure can be a problem since it's a 4WD. Having as little as 1/8" difference in tire diameter translates into a difference of 4 tire rotations per mile. Now if that difference is front to back, what do you think happens to the 4 extra tire rotations between the two axles when you're in 4WD?

Okay it "could" make a difference only when using 4 wheel drive then? Do I just have to make sure the 4x4 is working and not making noise and if not "assume" it is okay which is what you have to do for the whole vehicle when buying used. Can we put it in perspective though. How bad on a scale of 1 to 10 could this be? If the tires were pretty different would the owner know something was wrong whenever engaging 4 wheel drive or is the damage internal and completely silent to the driver? tks

The 4WD system has the ability to compensate for some difference front to back by cycling the front clutch in the transfer case on and off. From your description, the difference sounds minimal enough where you are NOT going to have a problem. For more drastic differences in tire diameters, other people have reported that it did cause problems with the A4WD system kicking in and out on them. You asked, so I was just giving a heads up, wasn't trying to scare you out of the deal.

Thanks. If I continue with this deal and get a pre purchase inspection I will have the shop measure all 4 tread depths and report back here. Appreciate the information.

i suggest that you have the seller send photos of all 4 tires and then look for signs of unusual wear patterns also have him use a coin in the tread to show the depth of tread on the tires. If he wants to sell he shouldn't have a problem doing this.

Worst case scenario is to swap the tires front and rear on one side only. Doing this will result in both axles turning the same revolutions per mile.
