Does anyone know how much a catalytic converter would cost for my 2000 f150 5.4 liter? I drove it yesterday and it seemed to be running rich and hot so i got underneath it and the converter was glowing cherry red. I figured that was a good sign i needed another converter. I would appreciate any input yall have thanks
From what I read from another post ages back that I can't remember. The problem is not in the cat. Correct me if I'm wrong but if the cat is cherry red that means that there is still combustion or unburned fuel getting there causing it to heat up. Wouldn't there be something wrong with the o2 sensors or the like to where there is unburned fuel getting into the exhaust. correct me if i'm wrong because I read this and I was just pitching an idea.
These guys are correct, the converter isn't causing the overheat, rather you are having a problem with poor combustion and you are getting too much unburned fuel into the exhaust. You truck needs a tune up, and pay particular attention to the condition of the old plugs, they can tell you a bit about the history of that cylinder.
