fx4 owners- tires

howdy!...
I have a 2003 fx4 ford truck..it came with goodyear wrangler at/s tires.
They are getting close to being swapped out for new tires. I was gonna get the same tires again but have found they are being phased out shortly, so my question to you guys is what brand would you recommend? I went to tirerack to do some homework and it appears the firestone destination at's were rated pretty good. Also the general grabber at2's were also. I went and looked at the firestones, a nice looking tire, but when i see one on a vehicle it just doesnt look as beefy as my wranglers. the general looks beefy and is also cheaper in cost. the general's have me concerned due to their other make of tires dont get great reviews etc. thought about the pirelli's , ford uses these now on new trucks...michilins are too high in cost as are bf goodrich...
anyway, if you guys have any input would appreciate very much...thanks !

I have a 2000 4x4, not fx4, but I just put on 275/70r16's on. Toyo Open Country A/T. Awesome tire! 50k mile warranty on them, and still under $150 a piece. I am driving all around Ohio on them and we just got 14" of snow. Can't say enough about them.

It depends on your application. Where I live the Toyo Tires are horrible in the mud. My brother had them on his Tundra and they did not clean out mud very well and were not a good off road tire. For mostly highway they maybe fine. I have had BFG AT's for years and have always had good luck with them. The Goodyear's I have heard good things about as well as the Coopers. We just started running Firestone ATs on our work trucks and they are very quiet but I am not sure if they are aggressive enough. One of the guys I hunt with bought the Yokohama's last year and already took them off after getting stuck twice in some moderate mud. He went with the Cooper Discover ST's. I really like the look of the Coopers and will probably go with them in another 20k

2003 FX4 SuperCrew Just finished a set of ProComp Load Range D 305/70/16's on mine and got 47,000 out of them. Mine see's highway use, some mud and off road and Tennessee winter. Performs great in all areas. I ran 45-50psi the whole time.

cv18sro is right. it depends on the application. BFG's are awesome off road, but horrible in the rain. dueler AT's are excellent on the highway and in the rain, but horrible in mud. so are the toyo's. Goodyear is still making the wrangler silent armor which is a beefy version of the AT/S. its a little more agressive as far as tread, and the sidewalls are stiffer so it will affect ride quality. its up to you though. you just need to figure out which characteristic you want in a tire.

my dad has an 02 fx4. it came with goodyears. i cant remember if they were actually silent armors, but they had the same tread style, they almost looked like a mud tire, but the ride did suffer some. i would say the silent armors would probably be good (only an opinion). since that set, he has gone through two sets of big o at's the older tread style wasnt to bad in mud, but the new one (we have one due to a road hazard replacement) looks like a straight up street tire and i seriously doubt it would be good in mud. however it is a great road and rain tire. i hav a 97 4x4 off road (same as fx4 just older) and it has nitto terragraplers. when i got in in august they had been on for two years (unsure of miles) and they will last till at least this spring. being so old however im assuming has caused them to loose their capabilities in the rain but i have heard they are good in rain. i know from experience that even with only maybe 30% tread they are great in mud and snow.

thanks for replies guys!
as far as type of driving i do- almost all highway/town driving...but also want something good for snow/ice, cause i have a job where i have to show up even if the world is flooding/tornados etc, ha!
so i need to be able to go down city streets that are slick or havent been plowed yet.
something else i hadnt thought about is the gas mileage change per different tires..ie one guy on tirerack said he lost 1-2 miles per gallon when he switched to the general grabbers if my memory is good...so there you go.........heck i may just stick with what i know ,the wranglers at/s,
may not be able to get a replacement next year but their still avail...
gonna go to the firestone place again and put a tire up against my truck and see what it looks like...really, i'm not making a big deal out of this, just 700 + bucks and i'm stuck with what ever i get for years....lol !

that is very simmilar driving to what my dad did with his truck and a very similar work situation... he HAD to be there. the big o's have a good waranty and wear VERY well. id say bout as good as a michilen. and with the big o's inflated at around 32 or so, got 17-18 mpg country highway running 55-60 with very few stops. the nittos are a beefier looking tire and perform about the same, but are better in extreme conditions than the big o's. but both are great and i would bet you would be happy with both. good luck with what ever you choose!

Take a look at Cooper Discoverer ATR's. Good all season radial, good in rain & snow.

My 3 favorites: ProComp A/T, Cooper ST, and the General AT2. I've run all 3 and they do well in my area. The procomp has the best longevity....

I would also look at the Cooper ATR's. I have heard good things about them and I bet they would fit your need.

On another note. I have heard alot of bad things about Pro Comps. I have never ran them myself so I am going off what other people have told me. They complained about them going out of round and very uneven wear. But like I said, thats only what I have heard.

i just put a set of firestone destination m/t tires on my 02 fx4 supercrew.
very aggressive tread. 10 ply rating. not as loud as most mud grips. I am very impressed with them so far, especially the way they go in the mud. a bit pricey.
