Parking Brake Sensor

Where is the parking brake sensor located (the one that controls the idiot light letting you know your parking break is set)? My idiot light says that my break is set but I know it isn't. It is driving me crazy.

Up above the driver's kick panel nearest the driver's door. If you look in-between the dash and kick panel with a flashlight you should be able to just barely see the switch.

If you depress the pedal all the way, then look at the top of the shaft you'll see a rubber bumper, directly above that you'll see a little brass button with a spring behind it, that's the switch, as shown in the following picture.

Also low brake fluid will bring on that light, I know on my 97 expy after doing a brake job and bleeding brakes the fluid level went low enough that the float in the master cylinder stuck to the bottom due to the sludge, keeping the light on. Just my two cents.

if fluid is low then the red light and the yellow abs light would be on- if they both work

I found the switch and it appears to move freely and seems to push all the way back out after being pressed in. I hadn't thought about the possibility of being low on brake fluid, but I don't have an abs light on. I will check thefluid this afternoon just to make sure that isn't the problem. Is it possible to bypass the switch so that the light goes out?

We have a winner!!!

Thanks cbradford. Low brake fluid was in fact what was making the light come on. I would have never checked that. I thought that light was exclusively for the parking brake. Also, just to maybe help someone out in the future, my ABS light did not come on even though my fluid was low.

But my manual for my 01 does not say if the brake fluid is low that both lights will light, only that after e-brake is released if "brake" light remains on that brake fluid is low.

Good afternoon Ladies & Gents,

I hate to resurrect such an old post, but this is my exact problem, and I noticed that there is even a picture of the piece that I am missing! Woot!

I have the Parking Brake Engaged warning, along with the wonderful chimes... I have been driving like this for 3 days, and just noticed that I am missing the Rubber Bumper shown in the picture above. If I press the switch in, the light goes out, and the chimes stop... If not... I am being driven slowly insane. Any ideas where I can get one of those rubber bumpers? It is not in my truck, and not in the garage either. I really need to find this before I start thinking the firing range is a good place for this thing!

Thanks!
