Door glass run installation
Door glass run installation
I am in the process of restoring my 46 Ford 1/2 ton and am totally lost on the glass run installation. I purchased the run parts + antirattlers from Dennis Carpenter, but surprisingly got no instructions from them along with the parts. Two of the parts have a metal 'clip' on one end of the back-one straight stip is wide about 2" and the other is thinner and both are straight. The third part is longer and flexible and I guess is the main run altho I'm not sure where it is located in the window. Can anyone explain where the parts go and how specifically the clips on the back of the two parts are supposed to clip into the door. There is a fixed 'run' in the door on the front and back and at the top of each is a portion that looks like the clips should catch in it, but how? I presume the heavier straight run goes in back and the thinner one in front and clips in place and the long run connects them...? I also got the anti rattlers which came with clips...and that looks fairly straightforward. One last question...is the glass in when the runs and anti-rattlers are installed, or does it go in after the runs are put in. I would really appreciate any help with this installation. phil.
The wider anti-rattler goes on the front of the door (hinge side) and clips over the top of the exisiting run. The smaller one replaces the insert in the back run. You may have to use some weatherstripping adhesive to get them to stay in-place. (They hook at the top, but want to not stay in the channel at the bottom.) They go in before the window is installed.
I'd take a picture, but I don't have an x-ray camera
They are a little bit of a pain to get installed, especially if they are not firmly "locked and glued" in their position. I found this out the hard way, as mine popped out of the bottom of the channel when the window was up. Had to take apart and use the "glue".
P.S. The third piece which is flexible runs in the door channel over top of the window and is held in place with the small screws which should have been in the kit.

No instructions...isnt it great! My kit came from Bob Drake and it didnt have instructions either.
I'm finally putting my DS window in today, after putting it off for 3 years, because of the diff. getting the PS installed. At the bottom of the front and rear permanent portion of the window channel in the door, is a little hook like affair that can supposedly be bent up and in to secure the antirattlers.

Thanks for the advice. I was able to finally get in touch with a Dennis Carpenter rep who was really helpful and I was able to get one door done. Ironically on both of mine, the small tab at the bottom of both larger door channels were broken off from the larger channel and the smaller channels were ok. I didn't use the adhesive on the one that I did, but am thinking of going back from the above advice. It seemed to stick tightly in the channel without the tab, but just to be sure, I think I'll take the time and do it where I'm reassured that it won't come loose. Luckily, the other door needs to be done and I'll use the adhesive from the outset. On getting the glass in its surrounding metal frame, I tried the 'standard' glass seal material, standard thickness and it just wouldn't go together. The difference of my glass and channel is ~.100 and interestingly the standard is ~.075" so x2 = .150 makes it really too tight. I did find at C and G that they have 5 different thicknesses of the seal, so I'm waiting for the 3/64 and 1/16 to see how they fit. Any advice here for me on this. Also, the 2 'sex' bolts that hold the frame together...did anyone have a source of that or what do others use? I found some, S/S, but very expensive. Got them just because I didn't want plain steel ones in there where corrosion is so likely. Thanks again for the help...hope to get the windows up and running soon. phil.
Find a local glass shop that does construction equipment windows (dozers, front-end loaders and such), then take your glass and channel to them. They should have the right webbing material on spools as they use the different thicknesses and widths all the time.
They probably can show you how to do it easily without chipping (or cracking) the glass.
P.S. First hand experience.
