having problems with my 2002 ford expedition. just replaced starter, selenoid, & some fuses. it started for awhile but failed after about 30 minutes. truck was off, & it started to crank without key being on the ignition. please help on what it can be.
I don't know about the "NO start" condition, you need to check for fuel, compression and spark. A shot of Ether in the intake (single spray) should tell you about fuel delivery. Don't shoot too much starting fluid in there! As for the truck starting on its own...I can't think of anything other than a bad ignition switch if the truck cranks with the key in the ignition, but NOT on. If it isn't the ignition switch, then you have a possible short or grounding problem maybe with the starter?
The worst thing you can do is throw parts at it...sometimes you get lucky, other times you end up chasing the problem for $1000, only to resort to giving up and paying the dealer $800 for a $100 part. I wouldn't have replaced the starter until I had the starter tested. If the truck cranked (but didn't start) with the old starter, it's likely NOT a starter problem.
Thank you so much for the replies..even if starter is new, would it still have that problem? Also, we just took in our battery to get tested, it didn't have any power, left it there so it can fully charge, do you think that could be the problem as well?
Sure, it could be, but the only sure way to test it is to make sure you have a good starter, good battery, good fuel delivery and good spark.
I assumed when you said it "tried" cranking, that it was turning over good, just not starting. Now it sounds like it was just clicking, but not turning over?
Yes it was...we're taking it in tomorrow, mechanic said it sounded like wires were making shortages & that we had a burned battery harnest as well. So hopefully it won't be that expensive. Thanks for all of your advice & great help.
You might want to change that starter at some point in the near future after the rest of the problem is fixed. After all of that extra cranking, it likely overheated a few times and is on the verge of failing.
