2. does the distributor go the same direction ? YES
3. do they make a right side exiting water pump? Same water pump as 289
4. can I use my 289 factory 4 barrel intake on the 1980 302? YES
5. do I use the same flywheel? I'm using the same C4 tanny. Just got to make sure it still uses 28 oz balance. In 1981 they changed to 50 oz and mixing them will cause a big vibration.
6. it has electronic distributor and my 1965 is not. can I use old style? YES
Rick are you planning on ditching the electronic distributor and useing the old style points? I would stay with the electronic distributor. I had points on my 71 302 once I changed over to electronic it ran and responded much better.
I already have the Pertronix stuff in my distributor and coil. That's the only reason for using that and I like the look of it being smaller.
Thanks alot for the info guys very much appreciated.
My harmonic balancer looks bigger on my 302 but the numbers read 1980....it is 4 bolt for the pulley and has a big groove in it........and the timing marks are about 3 inches long on the edge compared to the 289's timing marks are about 1 inch long. Does that help decide if it is the right balancer? I took it off the dirty old motor in the first place but I guess that doesn't make it right.
It's kind of a joke in our truck club cause all the other guys have big blocks of some brand or another but when we do a tour they get gas every 2 hours and I get gas at every other stop..... One guy says the cheapest part of hot rodding is the rubber! One guy always jokes and says his starter on his truck is bigger than my engine. Funny stuff.

ANY IDEAS ON THIS???
I had the same setup you are trying , 66 / 289 parts on 80 / 302 . wrong year it turned out to be an 81 from a late built 80 pickup . I sold engine and got a 77 302 , everything fit and worked fine , no more vibration . The person I bought the first engine from never new as he bought the truck new at the end of 1980 close out sale , FOMOCO just stuck it in and we never checked the numbers out on the vehical I.D . I hope you have better luck .
Bill........thanks ..it is an aluminum water pump. Always ticked me off it was expensive compared to cast.
How can I tell what stuff is on the 289 and the 302 for weights of the harmonic balancer. I would like to use my flywheel from the 289 plus the C-4. The 302 is 1980 from a Galaxie.
Michigan Rick................appreciate the help!

Reason: more info
Find and post the part number/engineering number in its entirety from the 302 balancer. Either I, Bill, or somebody else can decipher from that what crankshaft imbalance it is for. If it is for the 1980 and earlier 28 oz. imbalance crankshaft, then there is no reason that you can't reuse the balancer and flywheel off of the 289.

If you have an aluminum waterpump, the timing cover is also aluminum. The bell housing has five mounting holes.
This 289 engine block was only used from 8/1962 thru 8/22/1964. These parts will not fit the later block.
From production date 8/23/1964, the 289 has a cast iron pump, cast iron timing cover, the bell housing has six mounting holes.
btw: When I said early 1965 inre to the aluminum waterpump, I was refering to 1965 Mustangs, as the cars went on sale nationwide on 4/23/1964.
btw, part II: Considering the dates this block was used, are you sure it's a 289 engine? It could be a 260.
The 260 harmonic balancer (marked: C4OE-6316-A) and C4 flywheel (160 teeth) are not the same as a 289 uses.
