Recently discovered fluid on garage floor under the rear shock. Attempting to locate a replacement part number for the Navigator's shocks lead to more questions. Hence, my various inqueries below to the friendly members of this forum. Turns out Monroe and Bilstein have part numbers for the 03 Expedition however, nothing for the Navigator. It would be helpful to know if the replacement shocks for the 03 Expy are identical to that of the 03 Navi? If they are identical, why wouldn't both companies specify replacement shocks for the Navi directly? If anyone has changed their shocks on an 03 or newer Navi, I'd be interested in hearing about the experience and shocks used.
Good point, it was clear after one short ride though, the tire just does not maintain contact with the road. It seems to flutter over the smallest of bumps especially when cornering.
The replacement from Sachs was 260 per with no detailed product information. Just to be sure the right parts were ordered, decided to inquire with <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1lace>Lincoln</st1lace></st1:City>. Turns out the factory replacements from Ford were Bilstiens for 164, through a friend was able to pick them up for 124 each. The job itself was not difficult; the entire air bag/shock assembly is removed intact. Just 3 nuts on top and one large (30mm) bolt on the bot<st1:PersonName>tom</st1:PersonName>, disconnect the solenoid and toe link, and the air bag is free. Obtained a gasket kit and reused the airbags, reassembled with the new shocks then reinstalled. What a difference to the ride.
Was surprised to discover that there were more products that convert to conventional springs versus replacement air shocks. Suspect cost for the front air shocks would be similar to the rear (280 incl 2 gaskets kits), less than 600 for all four doesn't seem too bad. Compared to the ~900 metal spring conversion kits, not to mention the wiring modifications needed.

$689 from Strutmasters.com. Not sure what kind of wiring modifications the 03+ needs, but at least on a 00 the only wiring modification needed was to cut one wire behind the dash to disable the warning light and compressor.
