This is driving me crazy. I've replaced the window drive motor multiple times, with the same result, chattering movement at the top closed position. I've looked in 2 different books and don't see how the window knows when it has reached the top of the window track. There has to be some type of window limiting switches somewhere???? I sure can't find them in the door or described in the maintenance books. Can someone set me straight on this!! Thanks in advance.....
I'd say it's one of two things Marty. First it might be a faulty switch in the door, causing the motor to get random signals from the switch causing the chattering. Second would be a loose fuse, causing the motor to get random power, and causing the chattering. I've seen both happen, though the fuse thing was on a Plymouth. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the info. I guess I could of explained it better. It only happens during the operation of winding up of the window. When the window gets to the very top where it should stop winding up, It'll just sit there and chatter away as if it wants to keep going up until I let go of the switch. Going all of the way down it works as it should. Hope that explains it better.
uummm, no. The "limit switch" is your finger. If you keep pressing on the button, it will keep trying to go up. Not trying to be a smartazz, but why would you need a limit switch? When the window is up, just stop pushing the button. Just like if you hold the lock button down, it will keep power on the actuators until they burn up (there are thermistors in the lock actuators though that will open up if they get too hot).
The only maintenance I do to mine is grease the tracks with plumbers grease and spray the cloth window tracks with CRC silicone spray.

That's funny Anyhow what your saying is everyone that uses the switch to roll their window up sits there and times it perfectly as to when to shut it off??. Assuming you agree that that isn't how it works, then why is it that this chatter has just started a few months ago and I've tried 3 different window motors and they all do the same thing. Every car I've been in if you happen to be absent minded and leave your finger on the switch too long, I have never had one that chattered. Seriously go out to your truck and roll up your windows, leaving the switch turned on for a few seconds after the window gets to the top.....or to the bottom for that matter and listen if you hear a motor grinding away. Unless my hearing is going, my passenger door and my wife's vehicle doors does not make a sound.
Anyone else here on FTE have an intimate knowledge of the window workings in our trucks??? Again.....driving me crazy !!!!
The motor will TRY to put the window up, but shouldn't chatter. I know mine tries because if I leave the door open and the interior lights are on, they dim slightly. A motor certainly doesn't like to have current going through it when it can't turn, but it won't hurt it unless you keep it held down. It sounds to me like the mechanism is loose allowing the teeth to chatter on the gear. I've only been into mine enough to grease it, like I mentioned before. Have you watched it with the door panel off to see what it's doing when it gets to the top?

That is funny.... I never thought to have it apart and watch it when it happens. Duh on me Thank you for the idea !!

This is the problem right here.
It may entail replacing the window lifter to cure it.
It shouldn't chatter.
When I roll my window up it torques the door enough to push out the door panel, but won't chatter.
Thanks guys for the suggestions. I'm going to take the door panel off this weekend and see if there is anything obvious. All I know is it's got to be something other than the lift motor!!!! After 3 replacements, I thinks that is obvious
Have you greased the track? The last time I had a window problem (slow operation that made me think that the motor was on the way out) I sprayed some white lithium grease in the track to lube it up and everything was great after that. Also check to make sure that there isn't any obstruction in the track as well.
It may or may not help your problem, but it least it's (almost) free to do!
Yep did the the window tracks and also all of the mechanisms inside the door. Everything works well....window going up and down quickly, just the chatter at the top if the button isn't released immediately??? This just seemed to start one day, nothing that slowly came on...weird !!!!!
LOL, that was just funny! Never seen that one before.
But this is definately a good post, I hadn't thought about greasing my window linkages. I plan on taking my doors apart soon anyhow as my locking mechanisms are not working correctly. The passenger side door will lock just fine but will not unlock. Driver's side door doesn't work at all, which doesn't bother me to much but none the less I need to get in my doors and do some maintenance and now I'll add lubing the windows to my list.
