Thanks for all the help you guys have given me on my truck. So I thought I would update you on how it's going.
It's a 2003 F350 Dually 7.3, and I bought it really cheap as a salvage title. I was having some problems with it missing between 1000 and 1500 rpms badly. I had the CPS recall done and the VSS replaced, and put in an AIS filter. Still running rough.
So, at the advice of some of the members here, I took it to Black Magic Performance, and Kevin took a look at it. Surprise...the motor and chassis are early 99, and the body and everything else is 2003!! I've got a "mongrel"!
Anyway, he determined that #8 injector was dead and replaced it with an AB injector, which all the others are. Now it runs fantastic...like a whole different truck. He also said it was throwing all kinds of codes (soft codes, not showing the SES light) because the PCM is a 2003 model, but the motor is an early 99!
So, the rough running did turn out to be an injector, even though when I took it into the Ford stealership before I bought it, they said all the injectors were good...oh, and they didn't even mention it was a early 99 Powerstroke.
That also explains my post about having the old style air filter box in my 2003. Bottom line, injector has been replaced, Kevins says the motor looks good and solid, and I'm happy with the truck. Guess I've got a Johnny Cash "one part at a time" truck!!
Again, thanks for all your help. I think I'll keep taking it to Kevin for service because he knows it's a 03 with a 99 motor!
The bright side is that you've got an '03 with a forged rod motor. Having AB's means it's an early '99 motor, which doesn't make as much horsepower, but they're reliable as the sunrise.
Conceivably, you could bring that motor up to '03 standards, new injectors, new turbo and pedestal, new intake manifold, intercooler, etc, etc, etc, but it would be a bunch-o-bux to do, and if you're not going to hot-rod it, why bother?
It's still a good pulling machine if that's how you're using it.
I use it 90% of the time just as a hiway driver...the other 10% I'm pulling a 15K horse trailer. So I think I'll probably just keep it pretty much as is. I gotta admit, I LOVE driving it. I'm truly amazed...it pulled my 15K trailer last weekend up some damn long, steep hills even with that dead #8 injector. So I think even though it's a early 99 motor, with all injectors working, it's gonna pull the trailer just fine...plus, when pulling the horses, I'm not in any big hurry!!
