Have a 83 f350 4x4 making a cluncking noise in front end when in 4wheel drive only. Have manual lock outs. Seems to jump out of 4 wheel drive at higher speeds only. Cluncking noise isn,t constant, but like every every half to a mile. Doesn,t clunk when locked out.
sounds like your lockouts might be bad that could be reason for it going in and out of 4 wheel also check your axle joints they may need to be replaced warn lockouts are good and if axle joints are bad use spicer they are the best hope this helps you out bad 78 f 250
