you can put a different size converter but the smaller you go on size will change stall speed it all depends on what you are doing with the car or truck and what is done to the engine 12" is a stock converter hope this helps good luck bad 78 f 250
Usually the smaller converter will raise the stall speed, ie your truck won't really have any power on take off until you get the engine revs up. This is fun for racing and showing off, but not usually good for around town or towing.
I think going from a 12 inch down to an 8 inch will result in a really high stall speed. On my old Dodge, going from a 12 down to a 10 resulted in a stall speed of 3,600 RPM. Lots of fun for racing but a pain on the street.
Additionally the slip will cause a lot more heat to be generated. Unless you have a big tranny cooler, you will have lots of trouble.
Best to stick with stock sized components unless you have a good reason to change and the rest of the truck is setup to handle the change.
I would not do it based upon the little info you gave and my assumption that you are doing normal driving.
