Fender Question

I am ready to reinstall the rear fenders on my '50 F-1 and do not want to use a welting. I hate to install them metal to metal so I am looking for suggestions.

what paint are you using?

I have heard, both sides of the story.. a bead of silicone caulk on the fender edge, let dry, then mount fender.. also heard never use silicone on painted areas..
its unclear to me if USE and touch mean the same thing

I am currently without welting too.

You could cut the bead off the welting or use a similar type of stripping with no bead - that way you have a protective layer between the panels but nothing shows.

Somebody has to be different.
Are you going to be at Buzzies Car show on July 19 ? We probably will come over to it. I won a nice trophy there last year.

You could always do half half like I did. I wanted something in there to help with rattles. But I didn't want the welting visible. So, I got the welting and cut off the top bead then installed it.... No rattles nd a little cushion, but no visible welting after assembly.

Can you paint welting without having it crack and peel off? If do what kind of paint can you use?
That would make it blend in more!

I doubt it. I'm sure there are paints that wouls stick to it but eventually because of the flexibility differences, it's gonna crack. You could use a finish that is very "Hot" like a lacquer that would "burn" itself into the welting (which is vinyl) buy that will cause the welting itself to become brittle in time.

I suppose you could try and buy some vinyl color coating and match it exactly to the color of your truck - but that seems like a lot of work for welting. Most folks either like the look or dislike it. So going with hidden welting is something I've never seen.
