Oil cooler or not

I was wondering what others felt on here about a oil cooler. I don't think my 99 has one, but if I were to put one in it would be a air to oil one like a B&M stack plate. I was wondering if a oil cooler would help with the oil usage. I noticed in the winter time my oil consumption is around 1 quart every 4,000 mi. Where as in the summer time it is around 1 quart every 2500 mi. It looks easy enough to put it in line with the oil filter lines. Just wondering what others thought.

Hi, unless you are towing a very heavy load, with today's great oils, either normal or fully synthetic I can't see oil temperature being the issue. I would ask what oil - conventional dino or synthetic are you using now and what weight. If it's Motorcraft 5W-20, maybe go with a 5W-30 year round. One quart in 2500 miles is actually just fine from what I read on this forum.

Is there something else that could account for the oil consumption, like different driving patterns in the summer, maybe more or lots of short trips, maybe you take longer trips in the winter where once the engine gets up to temperature, it just cruises along. Do you tow under heavy load in the summer - ie the engine is working harder, not saying that this means an oil temperature issue, I don't think it does.

Thanks

Mike

I don't tow with the Expy, and I use 5w-30 at this time. I use Castrol Syntec.
Just wondering. When I was to change the hoses going to the oil filter, that would be the time to install one if I were to install one. I can see that Ford did offer one from the factory manuals that I have, but t is a water to oil exchanger.

You can buy an oil to air heat exchanger from Summit or Jegs or other similar suppliers.
I have a small one on my 99 and think that it extends my oil life. Within the past year I have been in Nebraska, California, Arizona, Wisconsin and am now in Ohio. I sample my oil and change oil accordingly. I change my filters annually. I use AMSOIL 0W-30 and AMSOIL filters. I have 177K on this 5.4 1999 expedition with no problems, plan to go to 200K ++. OBTW about 40% of your engine cooling is done by your oil. I don't tow either.
