Is it leaking from the center pad area? If so it may be coming from the air bag. Not good news. If that is where it is coming from you may have to replace the air bag assembly.
My 98 Eddie Bauer is doing the same thing. I tried mopping up the ooze with wet wipes on a 4-hour trip recently. It just seemed to get worse. It's coming out from the stitching on the top 1/3 of the wheel.
I finally gave up and got a leather (or simulated leather) steering wheel cover from Autozone. Over time, the stitching on the top 1/3 of my wheel has migrated around from being at the bottom to being in the rear. The cover I got completed covers the offending area of the stitching and I don't have the problem any more.
Mine started leaking the black stuff from the stitching this weekend as well. It's almost like a tar substance (really messy). Is there a link to the FTE parts guy?
