Ran out of gas, now wil not start.

I have a 2001 expedittion with 4.6 and 129,000 miles. Gas hand was just above empty and like a dummy I parked on hill pointing down while vehicle was running vehicle sputtered and died will not crank back up. I added about 5 gallons of gas and got it on level ground and still nothing. I alson cycled it like the manual says and also unhooked battery cable for about 15 minutes. Dont know what to do next please help.

Maybe after 130K miles, there was a fair amount of junk sitting in the bottom of your gas tank and when it was pulled in, clogged the filter. I would check that, because your not supposed to let your truck/car run on low gas whenever possible.

Maybe just air bound, so on the fuel rail there is a cap on a schrader valve (like a on a tire). Remove the cap after turning key on and off a few times and push in valve and bleed air out until fuel shoots out and continue this process.

The valve should be on the fuel rail.

Also you may need to reset the fuel cutoff switch, which sometimes needs to be rest if run out of fuel. This should be located on the driver or passenger side panel in the footwell.

I don't _think_ this would be a problem with in-tank fuel pumps but if the pump has run dry it might need more priming than just turning the key off and on can do. I had this same problem over the weekend with my racecar. I replaced the fuel pump (mechanical pump on the block) which drained the entire fuel line. Because the pump was just spinning air it couldn't suck any gas from the tank. We tried backflowing gas from the carb to prime it, but it wouldn't last long enough to get all the air out of the fuel line and then we were back to square one.

We ended up having to pressurize the fuel tank with the air compressor to force fuel upto the pump.

But like I said, I don't think this would be a problem with an in-tank pump, but maybe.

With 129K on it, you might have fried the pump. Since the fuel was low to begin with, the pump was already running hot. Then when it ran dry, the stress on the pump only got worse.
