found a speed density roller 5.0! crown vic! couple of questions...
hey everyone, i always assumed that (except for the 87 and 88 mustangs) that other speed density 5.0's were flat tappet cams. anyway i got a 91 crown vic dirt cheap, and was going through the motor to put a set of good heads on it, and its got the roller cam!
does this mean is SEFI? or is it bank fired injectors?
my plan is to get it running good in the car, and then do a mass air conversion, and then swap the whole efi setup into my 67 mustang coupe. then when i mock it up and get it running good in the mustang, ill pull it back out and do a 347 stroker....
should be a fun project.....any tips on swapping the efi into an older car would be appreciated. thanks
I'm pretty sure the basic CV motor is SD, if it doesn't have a mass air meter it's bank fired SD, it's that simple. But yes the cars got roller motors long before the trucks.. back in '87 or '88. It's a crappy little cam though, no better than the 5.0 truck flat tappet cam so it won't make any power unless you change it. It should also have grey top 14lb injectors so you'll want some orange top 19lbers along with a mustang computer and SEFI harness for the conversion.
Even though you can use the wiring harness from a Mustang, I'd recommend going with an aftermarket conversion harness. Painless has one, as does fordfuelinjection.com (and cheaper than the Painless unit). Using one of these harnesses you only have about 15 wires to connect into your Mustang's system to operate everything.
I did my Ranger swap with factory 1990 Mustang Mass air harnesses (there's a separate engine harness which connects to a main harness which has the ECU in it) and discovered that the main harness doesn't have any provision for the fuel pump, (that's located in a separate harness on the Mustang) and that's about where I stalled out on the swap.
the stock crown vic motor is a turd. they call it lopo short for low power, its rated at 150hp and about 260tq. it doesnt have the e7 heads, has a crappy cam, and very restrictive intake. thats why lots of guys do the mustang ho motor swap into the crown vics.
well i put a set of good e7 heads on it from my f150. im gunna try to get a mustang computer and harness for it......i was gunna put a good set of injectors from my f150 in it too, but if theyve got 14lbers then i cant do that....
i know the intake can be turned 180 degrees, and of course the tb on the vic points twords the drivers side, and i know the mustang is opposite.....i wonder if the mustang harness will work on this motor, as long as i put the computer on the drivers side of the car like the vic has origonally......thanks for the help
if i was you id get a mustang computer, the 19lb injectors. since you already have the e7 heads thats a plus, and also get the mustang ho upper intake and throttle body. cheap way to gain about 50+ hp in total. that should put you close to 225hp and 300tq which is what the 5.0 mustang motor was rated at, but you might want to go for a ho cam to get closer to the mustang specs
Yeah.. without a cam upgrade the other parts won't do much. And if you're going to change the intake do both parts and port match the lower while it's off, the lower is where the choke points are in all the factory intakes.
