302 shakes???

302 shakes???

I just put a 302 in my 89 Bronco II and I had a hard time getting it start. After I got it started it shakes really bad like its out of time or out of balance. It should be balanced right. It has a 85 or 86 cougar engine with the balancer that came on it and a 89 flywheel. So it should be 50 oz. imbalance. I've pulled the distributor about 20 times in two days checking and double checking that it I have in right. It doesn't backfire or pop at all. It will hardly run long enough with the vacuum advance unhooked and plugged to check the timing, but it will run with it hooked up and its reading 10* at idle.
I can't advance it anymore than that because it up against the thermostat housing. I need some more ideas.

Check your firing order . The 302s have two different orders depending on what cam it has . If its the stock 85-86 it should have the non ho firing order . If you cant advance the timing any more because its hitting the housing you need to lift the dist & move up one tooth on the cam gear so you will have more room to turn the dist ... Lew

Firing order for non-HO 302:
Counter-clockwise 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8
With 1 2 3 4 on passenger side and 5 6 7 8 on driver's side.

I have the firing order right, I tried the ho firing order yesterday and it popped and backfired.

I had the same problem you did with my 79 f100. I pulled my distributer in and out and changed the balancer 2 times. My motor was a 91 302 out of a crown vic btw. I put a 85flexplate on it b/c it was 50oz and it was a AOD on the 91 302. I eneded up changing the flexplate out and the fixed my problem. I wish I would have had the flexplate looked at before hand b/c that was alot of work to do. Pulling my 79 302 and putting in a 91 302 and changing it all to look like the 79 302. And then having to pull the trans b/c of a bad flexplate. At least it is all fixed right know but if I do it again I will do a few things different.

Measure all the plug wires for resistance, they should all be in the 5-8 kilo-ohm range, I bet you have a bad wire or maybe a dead sparkplug.

Make sure all the cylinders are firing. With the engine running, take off one spark plug wire at a time from the distributor cap and make sure it changes the way the engine runs. If you pull a wire off the distributor cap and it doesn't affect the idle, then you know that cylinder isn't firing. Make sure you wear a thick glove, getting shocked isn't pleasant.

also check for vac leaks pcv or even the in take could be somthing u didnt see take a day and relaxe and look agine you will see what u mist good luck
