I have a 429 in my 74 f250 trck and am considering changing the 4 spd to a AOD but is the AOD only for the smaller V8s like the 300?

IMHO, I wouldn't expect an ordinary AOD to hold up under the abuse a big block can dish out, even under normal driving circumstances. You can probably go for a stronger aftermarket unit. You might expect it to be similar to this, I suspect: https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles/feb2002/index.php
