Putting a 96 5.8 EFI in my brother's 90 or 91 ranger. Just gathering parts for now. I've got the complete wiring, computer, all engine accessories, A/C, dual tanks and all that stuff. The 96 F150 4x4 has an auto tranny, but he's going with a 5 speed out of a fullsize 2wd, so I think I'll need a different computer. The truck currently has the 2.3 EFI/ 5speed combo, and he's got some kind of aftermarket rear suspension (chrome, bolted on underneath) that has it sitting pretty low on Mustang GT wheels/tires. Will be using a Griffin radiator for 90 Mustang gt w/elec. fans.
I know he wants to retain the a/c, and I think his Ranger is A/C equipped. Will the 96 F150 A/C engine components work with the 90 Ranger cab/firewall stuff?
Will he need a cowl hood to clear the intake?
Will a Mustang 9" track width look close enough to stock Ranger, and What year Mustang to look for, and are there other cars/trucks than mustangs with 9" to consider? (will be converting to disc brakes if that makes a diff)
Anyone do anything similar to this?
It will be a year before my brother gets back from Iraq, so for now I'm just making a pile for him......of parts. Thanks guys.
Thats alot of questions, truth is, most of our experience is with the 5.0, which is basically a plug and play with a conversion kit. The 351 is a little bigger and were not not sure what is involved. I've heard you have to cut the heater box to get the 351 to fit, not sure what else.
A better choice would be an 8.8 rear diff from an 95-01 ford explorer, it fits easier, it's plenty strong, has disc brakes, a lot of them had the factory trac-loc lsd and they came with 3:73 or 4:10 gears. The newer mustang GT's and even the shelby's use the 8.8, as well as the F-150's. Also the explorer 8.8 has the 31 spline axles and big bearings for added strength.
