I've done a lot of searching on here and nothing quite explains my issue. Truck starts and runs fine. No obvious fuel or boost leasks ( I've been all over these).
The first issue is a noticeable change in the sound of the fuel pump on the frame rail. I've always heard the pump as normal but now have a high pitched noise from it. Fuel bowl fills fairly quickly and will continue to run if the drain is open.
Secondly, I have no smoke when getting into it. I'm not concerned about making huge black clouds but I used to at least have a little smoke.
Also, when accelerating there is a 2-3 second pause until the power kicks in. Push the go pedal and wait. It is very noticeable when pulling out going up a hill and shifting up.
My main question, can the pump loose ability to pump gradually or is it in the either it works or its dead catagory?
I need to do the pre-pump mods but want to make sure I have a good pump first. I do not have a fuel pressure gauge yet and may be a little while before I can get one set up. Any ideas?
I have seen fuel pumps with "borderline" fuel pressure readings, only out of spec by 1-2 PSI. I have also seen fuel pumps with a volume deficiency. I don't know what the fuel volume spec is for a 7.3, maybe someone on here can help. A noisy fuel pump can sometimes mean its on the way out, I would get a fuel pressure gauge and get some real data to work with.
I had the same problem. My fuel pump went out at the same time as my Cam sensor. The truck would run fine for a while, then it would act starved for fuel. I replaced the $400 fuel pump and the sensor. Now the truck runs fine. (99 F-350, 4" exhaust, super chip)
Since I haven't done it yet, I'm going to do the pre-pump mods and see if it helps. Once that is taken care of, I can then look at the pump. Just working my way forward.

Yes, it sounds like the filter in the mixing chamber is getting clogged.
kwikk, or anyone that wants to chime in, what do people do with the white filters in the mixing chamber? I know with the hutch mod they completely delete it but I'm not sure I have the time to get parts together.

I have learned, (the hard way) that there is a screen on the inlet side of the fuel pump that will quickly clog up if you eliminate the little filters in the tank.
If you want to Hutch the tank, ( a good idea ), then you really need to install something like this. THE FILTER
Plumb it in between the fuel tank and the inlet for the fuel filter.
Once that is done it will be an easy spin off the old spin on the new one on an as needed basis.
You can put a piece of hose and a cheap press. gauge (under $10 at hardware store) on the filter bowl drain to check FP. Just add clamps to little piece of hose that attaches filter to steel line that runs down front of block and add hose to end of steel line so ya can see gauge. Open drain and start truck to check pressure. I made the hose on end of steel line long enough I can collect bowl contents in a water bottle, etc for inspection. (after removing gauge)
If ya have good pressure (50-60psi) then look for restriction at pump inlet. Dunno if you'd have any luck gently blowing back into tank to release stuff at that screen????
Lifetime warranty replacement pump well under $200 around here??? Change it in about 10 min's too!
Not to be a smart azz, but just because filter is newish, does not mean it is not plugged up. Have you looked at it?
FWIW, I've found off-idle throttle response to still be good, even with a bad filter - but engine will 'run out' of fuel after a couple seconds in the throttle! I have a FP gauge in truck, so I can also see this happening - the filter can flow enough juice for idle, but not high demand...
Thanks Kwik and Sky. I will be tackling this sometime this week if time allows. Got to service a TDI and rebuild a Toyota frontend first.
Sky, what kind of pressure gauge did you place in the cab. Not real keen on a true mechanical gauge w/ possibilty of fuel leak. I have been looking at the Autometer electrical gauge though.
Kwik, where would be a good place to pick the filter base up. I was planning on some type of regular in-line filter but if the cost is reasonable, I like that setup.
Go under the truck unplug fuel line its simple on clips then conect hose put thru diesel can and start the engine fuel tank probably is clog. I have same problem fuel pump runs loud or remove fuel filter and check if its on top fuel when you feel no power on acelerating then shot off and check fuel filter i have some picture if you wany
