I am the proud owner of a 1946 Ford 1 ton pick up in great condition! I just picked it up today this is my first truck I have owned older than 1978! I am going to make a street/hot rod out of it I want to keep all the original body and trim but I would like to use a different drive train so it will have updated suspension ,brakes and power steering with small block ford and auto trans 2 wheel drive! Is there any newer trucks frames and drive train that will work with out major modifacations! The only thing the truck is missing is the windshield and trim Where can I find a cheap/ resonable price replacement??
For windshield and trim there are a few places to buy stuff from. MAC's lists each piece of windshield glass at $75 each. New seals are around $60 for the pairand the division bar is around $50. I have seen the trim on Ebay quite a few times and as far as glass goes, check with a good glass shop (not chain store) Most could probably make you a new windshield. I have also seen some with a 1 piece windshield installed. (I may do that on my 47)
As for the frame and suspention, I have seen some use S10 or Ranger frames. I know someone that used a 78 150 frame on his 55. Others will chime in and help out.
I do have the window seal and the middle bar assembly which they still look good so I just need the glass. Is the glass just a straight piece of glass that a local glass shop could make? This will be my first classic truck restoration and i will need a lot of help!
Has anyone every put a 40's truck on a ford ranger frame and if so how did you do it? I have heard the 89-92 ranger supercab frame and drive train will work and the front cab mounts even line up! I have no experience doing a chassis swap I am very mechanical I have done just about everything but this is a whole new challenge! How do you get everything to work together like brakes mater cylinder , gas pedal ,and electrical?
