Black Smoke?

How come I see alot of trucks blowing black Soot out, but mine does not? Does it have to do with the Catalytic Converter or similar? Its a fully stock 97 PSD.

I am also looking at getting two 5 inch stacks on it, and i dont want to do that unless I can pour black smoke out of them... otherwise they will look stupid...

Well, black smoke is usually a a bi product of horsepower or a chip set on the smoke position. You will not see smoke unless you start doing mods like injectors, chip, intake and exhaust. I would actually prefer not to smoke. Smoke is unburnt fuel.

if your set up right it wont smoke regardless what you do. thats what my grandpappy always told me. he used to race trucks. but idk how much tweakin on these trucks it would take to acheive that

Well the only Mods I plan on this truck is a set of stacks and a tuner...I dont want to get into the big down pipes and all that, bigger turbos, bigger injectors...

I just want a slight increase, and beable to **** off the Prius Drivers by looking like im polluting a lot...

What kit for the stacks did you get, and also do you have any black smoke out of them?

i made my own kit on a budjet. i get smoke but not coal. i have the 20k icp which increases your injector pressure in a sense givin it more fuel. it didnt hurt my mileage much at all. and i also have the 4.7k eot which advances the timing of the injectors. my idle is smoother now and response is amazing

I was thinking about doin the EOT mod. Does it give you a noticeable power increase like the 20k mod? I might put it on a switch if its worth it.

what are these mods and what do they do? Im really new to the diesel family, ive built many gassers though... but wow, PSD FTW, that last 460 truck I had was a dog compaird...

These are some basic mods that use resistors on certain sensors that fool the computer into turning up the power on the engine, in lamens terms. The only cost about a dollar and can give you about 50 horse extra. You'll be more smoke than stock, but not a cloud by any means. Its a cheap easy way to squeeze out some horsepower and learn about the motor.

Type in 10k mod in the forum search. Coonhunterjoe has some real good info on the 10k mod, which turns up the oil pressure from the high pressure oil pump and better atomizes the fuel. The Engine oil temp mod I'm not sure about. You can find all sorts of info. All you have to do is splice a wire near the front of the motor and put a resistor in.

Doing the 20K ICP did it still allow the truck to rev all the way up to 3500 RPM?

How bout the 4.7K EOT mod?

I dont want to loose any driveablitly out of it, but I have noticed that it idles some what rough, and it takes about 2200 RPM to get the turbo to start spoolin where you can notice it at WOT

I would look into the down pipe if I were you...the stock is VERY restrictive.....one of the best and first things to do to these even in stock configuration is the down pipe and intake

With the 20k mod i can still rev up all the way, it actually revs up faster at idle. You wont lose any driveability, you'll actually have a nicer running truck. It will take an extra second to get down to idle, but nothing major. As for the EOT mod i think you wont lose driveability, but you can always put these mods on a switch so you can turn em on and off.

It fools the computer into thinking the engine oil temperature is lower than it is. When the engine oil is colder the computer advances the timing, giving you a lil extra horsepower.
