I'm looking at purchasing a 96 F250 with the 7.3. The guy I farm for has an '01 F250 and I had an '85 F250 with the 6.9L. How would the '96 compare to these two engines? Mileage, horsepower, and quality?
Mileage is dependant on the gears the truck has, but i believe 16-18mpg is a safe estimate better than the 6.9( best we ever got with our 86 was 15mpg hwy and my 97 makes 19 hwy) and up there with the 01 7.3 . Quality wise you really can't beat an OBS 7.3 imo, but their just as dependable as the 01. Horsepower should be the same as my 97 which is rated at 225 bhp (there should be a sticker on the passenger side valve cover and it will tell you the rated hp for the truck), not sure how much less than the 01 but definetly more than the 6.9L. Hope this helps, others here can tell you more on the comparison against the 01, mine is based off my truck and our two old 6.9s.
i believe the '96 models had 215hp.. the '97 has 225 b/c of split shot injectors? i, personally, like the OBS trucks more than the super duty trucks. i have gone to look at 2 super duty's in the past 2 weeks and it seems that our trucks just simply drive better, but that could be b/c mine is 2wd and the ones i looked at were 4wd. also in '94-'97 trucks there was no powdered metal rods(PMR's) in the engines. they started putting PMR's in the powerstroke in '01 i think, correct me if i'm wrong. it also seems that the super duty's get a little worse mileage than the OBS's. mine gets 20 mpg and most of the guys i know with super duty's get around 15.. hope this helps.
you AVERAGE 20!? I have a friend who has the 03 and he says he averages 16-18. Idk if that's the 7.3 or 6.0. wasn't it about that year I.H. switched? My best with the 6.9 was 14.7mpg on a trip. My PE teacher has a 97 psd ext cab 4x4 MT, he said he also gets about 20.
I had an 86 6.9 and got up to 18 mpg on the highway depending on the load with 3.55 gears. My 97 73 gets close to 17 on the highway unloaded with 4.10 gears. Thats with a new tranny, brakes and bearings and sythetic lube in everything. My 05 6.0 (no mods) also gets about 17 on trips with a light load including the camper shell. It has 3.73 gears.
Good luck with your search!
Pete
P.S. If your looking at an automatic thats never been gone through its probably toast or close to it.

That is one of the reasons I bought my car. My truck won't go into reverse at 98k miles. What about the manual though? I used valvoline premium blue. Is that a good oil? I think one time it went 4000k miles w/o being changed, most times it was done at 3000.
compared to an 86 the 96 and 01 will be a noticeable improvement, the 6.9s are a solid motor but not nearly as strong in stock form, the 96 and 01 are essentially the same motor with a few variances, like the split shot injectors, electric fuel pump, a little bit better High pressure oil pump, and an intercooler, as far as chasis goes I think an OBS holds up better to work but the 01 will ride better but one thing that sets the OBS trucks apart are their style

normally, yes i average 20.. best i ever got was 22.7 and that was on the interstate going 80 to san antonio then back going about 60 keeping it barely under 2000 rpm's.
right now i'm getting in the 18's thanks to a stupid fuel leak that i can't get to stop!!!!! i have replaced the line twice now and it just keeps leaking.. i am tired of messing with it so until my injector kit gets here it's going to leak.. haha
on edit, cowmilker, i like that sig.. that song is awesome!! haha. mac belt buckle, white t-shirt ain't afraid to work.. ok i will stop, i have a horrible singing voice. haha
i won't put the 6oh too far down the list of must haves, though. apparently down in texas an oil company used ONE to move a 90k lb oil rig. at one point it was traveling at 50mph, but it burnt a whole tank of fuel every 5 miles i guess. lol.
