i have a 2002 4x limited. i would like to upgrade to the stock 17" aluminum wheels. do the newer explorer wheels fit? i dont know what fits what. i think the 16" are from 2002 and the 17" are from 2003 and up.

The only spec that wasn't listed in this reference was the offset. I would think '01-'06 would be the same.

Make EXPLORER & SPORT TRAC; Year 90-UP; O.E. Wheel Size 15"-18"; Bolt Pattern 5x114.3; Stud Size 1/2x20; Hub/Center Bore 70.6

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but this might be relevant to something I'm pondering.

My aluminums on my '97 are serviceable for now, but a down the road upgrade might consider a new set of wheels. I was pondering if any of the other styles of aluminums that Ford used as OEM might cross over. I'm running 15x7's now on (if I measured right) a 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern. I'm torn between going aftermarket - where I'm not seeing stuff I really like right now - and seeing if something that Ford used either on the Explorer or SportTrac would cross over to mine.

Ford cars and light trucks have forever used the 5 on 4.5 pattern, also known as 5x114.3mm). You can run everything from older Mustang, Ranger,Explorer/Sport Trac, Bronco II to Crown Vic (pre-'03). The late Mustang wheel have the same bolt pattern but won't sit out as far due to the offset, looks a little odd. This should help you out a bit.
