I am kinda new here so if this is old hat, sorry. I finaly got the 96 explorer to mess up when it has a guage hooked up and it was loosing it's fuel pressure. In looking for a how-to for removing the tank I came across a post that mentioned cutting the floor
Well I googled that and found a pic with measurments and today put a pump in. from on top. Guys, its the only way to put a pump in an Explorer.
Yep, I did that to a Tempo one time cause we needed to get it fixed that night so my sister could drive it 5 hours back to college the next day.
Then a few years later I put a pump in my '94 Explorer and dropped the tank. Went pretty smooth but halfway through I thought, "man, I should've cut the floor"
On our 96 I had to make another cut to move the hole over towards the middle another 2". Must a some differances in the tanks? It was no big deal though, laid the pieces back over the holes and a $15 fiberglass patch kit sealed everything back up nicely. The entire job including a trip to town for the patch kit took 3 hrs and best of all want on my back wrestling with a (always full aint they??) gas tank. There is about 2" minimum clearance to the lines and cover so you have room to work if you use just a bit of care. You wont be able to unhook the connector for the wires as it is between the tank and frame so they have to be cut to get the pump out and spliced. I didnt think to take any pics as I did it sorry.
Hmm, that didnt work, preview was OK? Oh well the hard way it must be, here is the pics from the article. This is under the rear seat, left side looking back. Take the rear seat out and roll the carpet up and you will easily find this spot.
