Filled up wifes 2004 EB Expedition tonight. It took 26.5 Gal of gas total. When filling the tank and before the pump clicked off there was one loud thunk that came from under the truck. There was no other cars or trucks at the gas station so the noise did not come from anything else. Also the truck was shut off. The noise occured when there was about 25 gals pumped into the tank and the gas was still pumping in. Does anyone know what caused this noise? This was the first time that I ever heard this in 3 months of ownership. Never occurred with any other cars or trunk we owned. Thanks
If it was a metal thump, the muffler is the culprit. On mine, The tach welds inside the muffler were shoddy at best and would make a thump after the truck was shut off as the muffler cooled off. Was it metallic or more like a rubbermaid garbage can?
It sounded like a metallic thunk. Rubber Maid Garbage can is close to it. You could feel it in the truck. Funny it had done it only once and not since. Anyway just got back from Florida and averaged 16.5 mpg at 75 MPH. Drove approx 2500 miles in 2 weeks. Not bad and more comfortable than my Toyota Corrolla.
