Question Drivers door lock has come loose from internal bar thingy

1998 Explorer XLT 4WD

Hi,

The rivet on my central locking mechanism broke a while ago on the drivers door. I haven't been able to drill it out (damn thing is difficult to drill) to replace the rivet which is part of this. The lock still worked with the key so I wasn't worried...

The other part was that tonight I turned the key and it popped off the internal mechanism / bar thing. I took the door panel off but I cannot see any easy way to pop the bar back on.

Now just to be sure I'm clear, on the inside of the barrel (where the key goes into) there is a white plastic clip thing. The metal bar that connects to this appears to have popped off.

Does anyone have instructions for how to pop it back on? I fiddled with it a bit but I am not sure what way round its supposed to be etc (the bar is moving about a bit) - I think I know but am not sure.

Finally - I am thinking of just taking it in to Ford and having them repair the whole locking mechanism, re-rivit it etc and leave it like new. Anyone got any idea what that work might cost me (I am in Toronto, Canada).

Any hints or tips on a self repair are greatly appreciated...

P.

Any luck?

I see it's been a couple of months since you posted this, and wondered if you had any luck? I am currently getting ready yo take apart the door panels on my F-150 so that I may reconnect the external key lock[disabled at the moment] back to the power lock. any info on how you solved this could help.

Thanks.

Lock etc

Hi,

Well I did as I said, I took it to Ford, had them re-rivit the lock solenoid back on the door frame and reconnect the bar with the white clip.

The riviting job was perfect but after we tried the door lock with the key twice it came off again. The body guy that did the work wasn't great and over tightened the door screws pushing them through the door moulding and broke 2 of the pop clips that hold the door moulding on. When I pointed it out the floor manager he agreed it was shoddy work and they fixed it for me, so it worked out and they were good about it.

Upshot is even Ford could not fix it and they said I would have to replace the lot, entire lock mechanism, including bars and fittings to be sure it would work.

So the key doesnt work ! But the remote does which is good enough. The key works in the passengers door so thats OK too...

My only advice would be if you decide to unclip the locking part etc, carefully note what way round things are and be sure they come apart cleanly, these seem to be a bit fragile and when worn they don't stay together well if the plastic weakens or is damaged...

HTH

Thank you

Thanks for the quick reply, I will put this information to the best use I can. Though I'm not up for a dealer fix right now, it does steer me in the right direction.

Again, Thank You.
