Flew to Phoenix AZ on Jan 3rd. Left Jan 4 to drive to Sacramento. Spent a week with the inlaws and drove back to Phoenix to pick up the fifth wheel TT. Left early Wed morning and got back to HOuston about 7 friday nighty.
Trip went very well. Highest milage was 18-19 without the trailer. With the trailer was 8-10. The truck is 2001 with 121,000 (mow 124,000) miles on it. It has a 4" exhaust and a TS Performance 6 position chip.
I take off with the chip set at 100hp. After I get to about 65mph, I will switch to 140hp. I was able to tow the trailer at 75mph all day long. I had power to not only maintain that speed up the hills, but to accelerate up the hills. It is unbelievable.
I did shred a tire 150 miles from Houston and it did not affect handling at all. I was beside a rig when it went and I would not have known if he had not blown his horn.
That was the only problem of the whole trip. Went very well and I am very happy. Now the wife wants me to leave it home so she can drive it.
I hope you have gauges! If not, get some ASAP! I don't know about the TS chips but towing at the 140hp setting... I'd be worried about EGTs. Too late now, but once you have gauges you'll know. Glad the trip went smooth for you! (minus the shredded tire).
I agree with Brendan even a TS chip can get your EGTs up there escically hauling a trailer up some big hills. You might consider taking that TS chip off and sending it to Tony Wildman at www.totaldieselperformance.com and it will be the best 150 bucks you have ever spent.
You must have a dually if you didn't know the tire was flat. I sure hope you have gauges also. No way would I tow in 100 hp. much less 140. My EGT would be through the roof.
I was thinking either it's a dually or one of the trailer tires blew. I'm more worried about him running in 140, even on the flats, while towing that much. Heck, IIRC Jody says his 120 & 140 are for "bursts" not all day running. 'course that TS won't really compare, but the idea is the same.
The pyrometer never got above 1000, mostly 7-800. As low as 600 on the flats (most of the way). I did not nail it hard enough to downshift and blow smoke. I am not interested in blowing smoke. I used my scangauge to monitor the mpg, and I was getting more mpg at higher hp setting, I was only using 60hp most of the time. Just because you put the switch on 140 does not mean you have to push the pedal to the floor. I was also watching the lode % and it is much lower at 140hp than at stock, meaning I am not putting as much lode on the engine for the configuration.
Upload it to your FTE galleries or by webshots. Is the sensor in the down pipe leaving the turbo into the exhaust or is it on the exhaust manifold or the pipes going into the turbo from the back?
If it's in the down-pipe, you still could have exceeded the "safe" temps. There isn't an exact conversion between up-pipe EGTs and down-pipe EGTs. I suggest you get it moved ASAP. How big is the trailer?
Here is the pic. You need to move this to your up-pipes or your manifold. You are not getting a tru reading there. You were around 300* warmer then you thought.
EDIT: Darn JD, you got me on this, but I was helping a customer.
