So I am the proud new owner of a 1996 F-250, as well as a proud new member of this forum. It is time for my first oil change, and im looking for some advice on what oil i should be using. I know what weight to use and all that, but I am having problems finding a good brand of oil that is compatible with the
Powerstroke.
Welcome to FTE. If you stop by one section down, you'll find what we call the OBS (old body style) section.
For the oil, just stick with a major brand. Delo, Rotella, Valvoline, Mobil Delvac, are all good brands. If you want to go the extra mile you can look into Schaeffers. If you live in a cold climate, you might want to consider a synthetic oil. It helps with the cold starts.
i run 15w-40 rotella all year long is this hurting my engine any?
No. If you're truck doesn't like the 15w-40 in the winter, it will let you know. If you notice the romps when cold, you can switch to synthetic. If you don't notice any problems, stick with what works. I run dino oil year round.
Switching back and forth between synthetic and dino oil will not hurt anything as long as both oils have the proper diesel rating.
So does anyone know where they get the rating system? CJ-4 CH-4/SH... etc...... Do these numbers and letters mean anything? Or are they just random numbers used to designate different mixtures?
The C's stand for commercial, which designates this as a diesel rated oil. S's stand for service, which designates this for use in automobiles. You will find that diesel rated oil will meet automobil specs, but not vise versa. The CJ-4 rating is for the 2007 and lated diesel motors, but it is backwats compatable and safe to use in our trucks. The old spec was the CI-4. The new CJ oil were formulated to withstand soot much better than the older CI oils. Hope this helps.
