99 4wd exp-
Noise in front axle making a clunking sound- like it was gonna come apart! in slow turn to right at 5mph or so.
I have read other threads pointing to shock mounts and ball joints, and some have suggested replacing fluids in transfer case. Is this something I can diagnose? Or expert diagnostic?
here is what would do. get a good jack and a stand. jack it up. grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o clock. try to pull the bottom out and push the top in like wiggle it back and forth this would indicate if there are ball joint problems. next grab at 3 and 9 do the same wiggle. it will check your tie rod ends. last check 2 and 8 and or 10-4 to see if ther is play there that would be wheel bearings. normally you get more of a growl than bump noise if the are bad though.
Thanks Wrenchturner,
I'll have to buy that good jack, I have just a big bottle jack. and wimpy jack stands. I will follow your advice and work your procedures. about the growl, I have had the GROWL it seems every now and then since Hmmm maybe after 2 years I think. I bought it new from the dealer in 99. It would growl and get hard to turn in parking lots jocking around. But it would clear up after you traveled straight for a bit and wouldn't happen for awhile. But it hasn't growled in a very long time that I know of, Wife now drives it to and from work about 25 miles round trip mostly city. But have had alignment along with new tires recently, would ball joint or tie rod ends show slack during alignment?
it didn't post my reply yesterday. A decent shop would mention any tie rod and ball joint problems since it will affect alignment. a crappy shop would say they are bad and insist on them replaceing them to make money either way it would have come up.
Harbor freight is good for stands and a jack. I wouldn't get tools there that you are expecting dewalt quality from. but there are good tools there.
a fluid change never hurts. If something isn't clutching right or dirty it may cause issues.
I'm having this exact same issue. And I've noticed that everytime I hear the clunk (if I take it easy enough it doesn't happen), the front LLS sensor pops off.
Shortly thereafter the Check Suspension light comes of course, so each time I have to get underneath and click the sensor back on to the little ball.
Obviously something is shifting significantly, I just can't figure out what it is. Ball joints and upper/lower control arms were done earlier this year. Oh yeah.. 2000 Expedition Eddie Bauer.
Any luck resolving this issue. My 2000 Navi is doing exactly what you described. I only hear the noise when making a right hand turn at about 5-10 mph.
