Hey guys im putting together my 79 dana 60 and am having a little trouble. Im down to puttin the hubs back together and as far as i can tell i am installing everything correctly. They are the stock hubs. When i put them completly together i cannot turn the red know all the way to free and when i turn the tire you can hear that the hub is not fully disengaged. So im curious to see what you guys think, i have taken them apart and cant figure out what im doin wrong..........Thanks Guys
How is the dial indexed on the locking assembly itself?
Start with the ring and dial removed and verify that the hub itself is locked. Turn the tire to verify this, then install the dial and retaining ring while the dial is in the "locked" position, and not in the "free" position.
You may just have the orientation incorrect, it is a common mistake.
The detent won't line up, because the dial can;t turn all the way and the hub itself wont disengage.
well im preety sure i have it indexed rite. It seems as if my inner snap ring is allowing the spring to rub on the wheel bearing. Also the snap ring is so big that it overlaps itself when i put it into thu slot in the hub. Do i have incorrect parts????????
Have you a clean pic?
I have seen these assembled incorrectly many times, and the result is the indexing of the dial. You can actually have the ramp of the dial in the correct location, and it will bolt up, but if the hub ltself is engaged and the dial is set to "free" it will bolt up. You can tighten the bolts and everything down, and you will never get it fee.
As far as the large snap ring, it cant overlap itself, for a couple of reasons:
1) it should not be so large that this could be possible
2) the groove in the hub itself is not wide enough to allow any snap ring to "stack" and still fit in the groove itself.
Regardless, you may have some other issues, but it is simple to figure out.
Now if your spring is riding on the bearing, then you have some missing components. You are missing the spring retaining plate.
Here this is easier, and you probably need this. This is like "Gold" so save it, or copy it. You will use it now, and eventually you will need it again.
Much luck: http://www2.dana.com/pdf/5330.pdf
Are you sure you have the gears in right ? Put the dial in the lock position when installing it. I've never seen a '78-'79 60 hub come from the factory with the spring seat. ( not saying some didn't, but I've never seen one ) I've always had to buy them. If you don't run them the spring can over time cut into the bearing cage and let the rollers go.
the biggest problem with these(if im remembering corectly) when the dial is off the truck, the hub is LOCKED.
so when putting the dial back on, you must place it in the lock position, then turn it to unlock.
