Has any one ever rebuilt a ZF 5 speed tranny? I recently swapped a ZF (to replace the busted M5OD) into my 96 F150 as part of an upcoming 4x4 conversion. The P.O. ran 80-90 gearlube in it... I am aware it's supposed to have D/M ATF. I refilled the tranny with ATF and it's making all kinds of racket, growling and such. I drained out a couple quarts and refilled it with some Lucas oil stabilizer, which did help. Now that I am driving my diesel pickup for the winter I want to pull this one in and finish the 4x4 conversion. I have decided that I should probably pick up a rebuild kit and go through this tranny. I have heard that ZFs are a PITA to rebuild is this true? I did an old NP435 a few years ago, it wasn't too bad. Any feedback is much appreciated!
A guy on here, frederic is his screenname, has rebuilt one before. Try sending him a private message or email, as I haven't seen him online in a while.
I have located several rebuild kits for this tranny, none of them come with syncronizers. I checked with one of the bigger auto parts distributors over in Grand Rapids MI and found out they had to be purchased separately... and they're not cheap. Oh well... I guess hopefully someone will chime in who has messed with one of these. Otherwise you guys will definately hear back from me about how good or bad of a job it was.
