I currently have a 1966 F100 with a 352. The tranny has gone bad and I need a new one. Tranny is a 435 and I am looking to convert to an automatic or stay with a standard if its too much work. What tranny is direct replacement with the current 435? I was looking at a C6 but mods have to be done and I'm not sure if a C4 will work. Can somebody help me out with this? Thanks a lot and appreciate any feedback.
Sorry to hear of your troubles. You will probably get multiple replies here.
There are no C4s with your bell pattern AFAIK. Even if there were, it's the same work as putting in a C6. You note mods have to be done for a C6--have you decided a C6 is too much work? If so, "That's all, folks" for automatics. Unless you buy a $600 (+/-) adaptor, no other auto trans will bolt up.
The NP435 should be available as billions and billions were served. Ditto the BW T98, T18, T19, all of which should be direct replacement. Get the tape measure out to be sure.
But wait. What exactly is wrong with the NP435? Not shifting? Or gears out the side? Not shifting may be fixable. Have you pulled the shifter for a look-see?
I would like to go with a C6 but I don't know what mods need to be done. I read on another thread that the driveshaft needed mods but not sure what exactly. Do you recommend a C6 or should I just stick to a 435 or a T18 or T19? I bought the truck from a guy who wanted to get rid of it and as I was changing the clutch out (that's all he said was wrong) I noticed cracks in the transmission. I pulled the tranny out completely and sure enough cracks were all over the tranny from hard shifting or old age. It is the original tranny but you can see where the fluid was shooting out. So now, I'm in need of replacing the tranny, which is not a big deal as this is a project truck. Any recommendations will help. Thanks in advance.
For an auto, you might have to move the cross member and lengthen or shorten the driveshaft. Figure $200+ for driveshaft work. You can wander the scrap yards to try to find one, and then spend more money on u-joints, and wonder if it's really straight....
Like I said, another manual box can be had, they are almost like sand at the beach due to the number of years used.
Cracked a NP435? Pull that clutch apart, check the flywheel and pilot bushing--make sure that input shaft is supported correctly if you go back to a manual.
More $ you don't know what to do with? An NV4500 OD 5 speed can be made to work, not free, no coupons, but if you're thinking that way, checky this here:
Just rebuilt my 435, cracked case??? Those things are ~3/4" thick. Anyway, my tranny is the original 1978 and it is solid as a rock. Rebuilding these transmissions are so easy it's hard to believe, but if your case is cracked then you're out of luck. You can get a new 435 and a used 435 at Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. Try them if you can't find one around, they also have all of the rebuild kits also.
Thanks for the responses. A guy I know has a C-6 out of a 360 Motor. Do you know if this will work? He said it has the automatic on the column.. Can this be modified to be on the floor? Will it even fit? Sorry for all the questions but I'm new to this tranny stuff and trying to figure it out.
if you're going with an automatic, then got to a scrap yard and get the column and all of the linkages as well. I have seen floor shift autos also, i don't know how you'd go about it but it can be done.
That is what I'm wondering.. How difficult it is and if it is even worth getting an automatic that had a column shifter. Is there anybody out there that has done this before?? I have done research on it but I can't find anything that shows what needs to be done. Is there even C-6 tranny's that were on the floor??
dude, my honest opinion is that you should just get a new 435, it's direct swap and not to hard to do, the auto is more work and probably way more money. Just my opinion.

Yeah I know, its pretty crazy. I'm just wondering how the hell they cracked the housing. Check them out:
Honestly, I'm not sure what I'm gonna do yet. A lot of opinions have said go with the C6 and a few have said to stick with the 435. I really wanted an auto but I love standard. The guy that wants to sell me a C6 said he will give everything to me for $250 which is not a bad deal. I'm stuck....
