swap to a bigger motor

i will be getting a 429 and 460 cheap. i would like to put the 429 in my truck. will 460 parts mount up to the 429, ie bell housing and motor mounts and stands? also what else would i need to swap this over, i have a 351w in it now. i was told that the 429 and 460 are basically the same block, is this true? my truck is a 90 f250 4x4 5-speed. thanks yall nik

The 429 is an FE motor, so you will need a tranny with an FE bell on it. You will also have to convert to a carb, so you'd need to get your fuel pressure down to about 5 to 7 psi. Not sure about engine mounts, but since the motor was never offered in your truck, you may or may not be able to easily find the parts you need. Fabbing them is also an option if you have the skills and tools. This would be a fairly complicated swap. There are likely going to be a lot of minor issues that could add up to a lot of time and effort.

The 460 would be a much better fit. Since it was offered from the factory, you can go to the junkyard to find all the parts. You can also keep the EFI system, which is a plus in my book.

Yes the 429 and 460 stuff will swap but is totaly different from your 351. There are conversion motor mounts you can buy but you will need a diiferent transmission the bellhousing is different.

Andym, the 428 is an FE not the 429, 429 is a 385 series just like the 460 they are externally the same.

Whoa, the 429 is not an FE. It is the 385 series, same as the 460, and will have the same fitment. The 427 and 428's were FE's.

I guess on my tranny the bell housing is not removable? I'm not too concerned with the complexity since it's more for............ Ummm fun and power than nesecity. If a have to have a completely new tranny what one would I be looking for, I want a 4 or 5 speed?

....with the big block bolt pattern.

Not the small block or diesel style.
The bell housing is integral on the ZF's

Don't for get to get the transmission crossmember too.....

if i decide to go carbureted, what would i need that i dont have already? assuming the motor is already carbureted. as i know little about carbureted and quite a bit about EFI, all help is welcome.

According to your "new to.." post over in the 385 forum it's a '94 engine, so it came with EFI.
You could swap to a carb but you'd need an adapter plate made by Price Motorsports.
You still would need an exhaust for the efi (post '87) engine, but no need for the O2 sensors and stuff.
I've posted to a few threads about this.....

Depending on what it came out of, at the very least you'd need a rear sump oil pan and a pickup tube to match. (The 429's never came in trucks)

The 429's are internal balance so you may have issues with finding a properly balanced flywheel that will mate with a clutch for the ZF. (everything post '78 is external)

I'm not sure about the 429 crank pilot shaft bushing-ZF input shaft.

You need exhaust manifolds from a 4X4 for clearance putting a car motor in a truck.

But motor mounts for a 460 will work fine.

There's a zillion threads about this stuff.
Monsterbaby has forgotten more than I'll ever know.....

Does the 429 need rebuilt? If it does, get it bored over, use 460 pistons, and crank for a 466. Bigger is better!

I have a '69 429 that I might put in my 88 someday.
