Just for fun. If you were King and had a bare 5.0 block and transmission to build into a working truck, what would you put in it?
Me, I'm an old traditionalist:
Cam: Crower cams 258H Baja beast with Rhoads lifters
Carb or Fuelie: 625 CFM Carter
Forged or Cast: Cast is fine
heads:58cc with 180cc runners, Windsor type
intakes: Weiand Stealth dual plane
Transmission: E4od
Rear end: 3.55
Road puller or 4x4: road puller
Wheels: 255/65R16
Or anything else that fit your fancy
if I were king,I would have choice of what engine I wanted, and the smallest engine I would consider for a truck is the 351w/5.8. In my opinion, the 5.0 should have never been an option in a truck. makes one heck of a motor for a mustang though!!
Yeah.. the first thing it would get is a 347 stroker kit, but that's a compromise when you could have a 5.8 that would outlast it 3:1.
If I had to use a 5.0 I'd opt for 160cc heads, long runner EFI intake, 260 duration cam, 10:1 compression, longtubes, a custom 6-speed manual tranny, and at least 4.10 gears, the little Wheezer needs all the help it can get.
My build would start with a 460 or 429, those are truck motors. The 351w is a wannabe, and the 302 was car engine for stuck in a truck to please the goofballs that wanted a truck AND fuel economy. Give me a 460 bored and stroked to ~502ci, then put a HOT cam in it to make the truck shake, about 12:1 compression, forges pistons, then a roots style blower on top just for fun. This should eat up some asphalt, and gas.
.....For massive fuel destruction I keep an Itascha 454 RV, Bug smasher deluxe model.....If that does not feed the need, There's a 1968 Olds Tornado out back with a 455 sporting a modified 1050cfm Quadrajet an a 305 grind custom Mondelo solid cam that was the bane of burnout contests years ago.....I want a 460 for my F-250, but haven't found one I like yet......All my other Fords are 300-6's, save the ranger 2.3.....And the Stang 5.0 HO....
It used to blow out the tires in less then 5 seconds if you kept it hammered down with the brakes locked. I won a lot of shows with it. I stopped when the CV joints started getting rare. I always wanted to try out the full top end, but 172 is the fastest I ever got it. I'm pretty sure it could wind out higher.
172 Kilometers per hour? Couldn't be Miles per hour!
No it was 172.13mph at Atlanta International Raceway, the old track. The speedometer stops at 160mph, but that's what the lap timer said. I've been faster on that track though. 187.79mph in a 1969 Buick LaSabre. Probably could bump that up a point or two since the track lengthened a bit since then. They are doing 190 plus on a lot less engine these days. The old cars held the track better to me. Tires are much, much better now. We we using Tiger Paws back then.
