Im trying to figure out if the 40 ford cab and the 47 are the same? they look
the same, doors look the same also. anyone on here a expert on these things?
i have a 47 cab but no frame, what year frames are the same? or what could i use?
I used to think they were the same even though I have been told there not . I seen a guy with a truck were he had the 47 cab and a 41 front end they did not match up , it was close but no cigar
Well proford, your not the only one that has asked a question about these cabs. The frames for the 42-47 are the same with parallel springs and frame rails. After 41 Ford redesigned the frame from a transverse spring to the parallel springs beginning in 42. The car remained a transverse spring until 48. The cabs are similar in looks but there are some differences I dont know them all but the front fenders bolt to the lower part of the cab on the 40-41 and the 42-47 one place at the top. The gas tank was under the bed on the 40-41 and moved to the cab on the 42-47. I don't know this first hand but I dont think the door windows had the metal frame around the glass on the 40-41 like the 42-47s
Thanks for all the info!!! so i guess the frames from 48 to 56 wont work either? i've found one of those for free. Im just not crazy about the front clip of a 47 and would like to use the 40 style on this truck. maybe i should buy the glass front end then if it doesnt fit i can cut and make it fit!!!
Proford1, The frames from the 48-52 are very similar to the 42-47. The one difference that stands out is that the 48-52 front frame horns extend out more past the core support because the bumper fastens directly to the frame and the 42-47 uses brackets. The width dimension front to rear are the same. You would have to change cab mounts to fit the earlier cab. Many people use suspensions made for the 48-52 to install on their 42-47 frames including myself because most aftermarket folks advertise to fit 48 +.
Hey proford . You know i wasn't a big fan of the looks of the front end on the 47 either in fact I thought it was the uglyest truck ford ever made but after a while it kind of grows on you and you just don't see many of these trucks driving around , I take mine to car shows and events and you would not believe the attention it gets, I am shocked every time about people asking about it and taking pictures of it .. PS theres a guy a block away from me who has a 47 truck sitting on a trailer in his front yard it looks complete been there for at least six months still on trailer not sure what he wants to do with it painted black with flames on the front end
The 42-47 also differ from the earlier models in the fact the the trim "rib" around the back of the cab, across the doors and into the cowl is a double humped rib, the prior are a single hump.
Been looking for 16 years for a sliding back window from a Merc, now I understand they were only in the COE's? which would make them even harder to find. As for ugly, you bet, I now have 5 from '42 to 47 and looking for more to use up the extra parts I have, but that snow ***** when you buy another one as usually get extra parts and then need another truck.n PS. the 40-47 cabs interchange, the difference being gas tank filler , dash trim and a few fender mount holes, they will fit on a 39,40 passenger and 40,41 commercial frames.
