65 f100 Started Slow then Didn't Start

Thanks for reading.

Yesterday morning my 65 f100 started slow. Low whirling sound instead of faster sound of engine turning over. Eventually it gave way to a quicker sound and the engine started. Started once more after that. Third time I tried to start it nothing. Just the starter--I think--clicking. I still had power, but a rolling jump start did get her going. On the way home after the rolling jump, it was missing bad. Lots of hesitating. Tried to start her up after I got her in the drive but still the same clicking sound and nothing more. Any ideas?

Thanks again.

I would check three things. 1. The battery is shot (bad cell) 2. The cables are bad (wont charge the battery or run the starter) 3. The alternater is shot. Start with the battery and connections and then go to the alternater. I had the same symptoms a couple of times. Once was the alternater and the second was a corroded positive cable. Good Luck.

The starter could have excessive draw (my 6cyl just did the same thing).

I don't think the battery is shot. I still have lights and everything. Tried cleaning the battery and connections. Starter still clicks maybe louder having cleaned the battery and connections.

How can I test if the starter is bad? How can I test if the alternater is bad?

Thanks again.

Starter does have excessive draw. I guess that means its shot. Strange because I had it replaced less that 2 years ago. Just how difficult is to to replace a starter motor on a 65 f100 anyway?

It was the starter. Replaced it this morning. Very easy to do with proper tools. It has three bolts one of which is next to impossible to access. In fact, the last people to change the starter omitted it altogether. I followed their inspiration.
Any ideas why a starter would go bad after only a year and a half/two years? Thanks a lot guys.

With those symptems, I would suspect poor insulation (varnish) in the field coils or armature. Outside chance something in the engine created a heavier than normal load on the starter which led to exessive heat in the starting motor and eventually insulation break down.

The typical el cheapo autoparts "rebuild" is the answer.

All these shysters do is soak it in some cleaner, replace the brushes, mebbe one or both of the bearings, and into a box it goes.

If they spent a coupla extra minutes cleaning up the armature, it might last another 6 months.
